New Leadership at Mercy's Southeast Missouri Hospital College
Mercy's Southeast Missouri Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences in Cape Girardeau has welcomed a fresh face in leadership with the appointment of Pamela Slaven-Lee, DNP, APRN, FAANP, as the new president. The decision, made by the college's Board of Trustees, marks a pivotal moment for the institution as it continues its commitment to healthcare education.
Dr. Slaven-Lee joins Mercy from C3 Cares, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., that focuses on improving healthcare access for underserved communities. As the Chief Operating Officer, she played a crucial role in ensuring the financial sustainability of the organization while fostering strategic partnerships to enhance healthcare delivery.
Additionally, she has served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Marymount University where she oversaw academic programs across multiple campuses. Her leadership contributed to the expansion of graduate offerings and elevated the university's research status to a Carnegie Classification. Stephanie Clements, Mercy's senior vice president and chief nurse executive, praised Slaven-Lee's track record, noting her ability to develop strong academic programs including widely respected online degrees.
Dr. Slaven-Lee expressed her enthusiasm about joining the Mercy community, stating, "I have always been drawn to institutions that combine academic excellence with a strong sense of mission and values while preparing students to become thoughtful, compassionate and highly capable providers. Mercy embodies all of these qualities." Her vision includes collaborating with faculty and staff to expand the college's influence and continue its mission of producing skilled healthcare professionals.
As a nurse practitioner with extensive experience and academic leadership, Dr. Slaven-Lee also engages in community service, evidenced by her founding membership with Wreaths Across America, an organization dedicated to honoring veterans.
Dr. Slaven-Lee is set to embark on her new role on July 6, succeeding the long-serving Dr. Steven Langdon, who retired after a commendable tenure. His leadership has been pivotal in propelling the college into a promising future, guaranteeing that the college will continue producing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Mercy Health is recognized as one of the largest health systems in the United States, providing holistic healthcare solutions across various states. With over 55 medical facilities and 50,000 caregivers, Mercy aims to impact millions of lives positively with both recognized patient care and profound community benefits, including substantial financial support for local health initiatives. Dr. Slaven-Lee's appointment symbolizes a promising direction for both the college and the mission of Mercy Health.
As Dr. Slaven-Lee prepares to implement her ideas and initiatives, the future of Mercy's Southeast Missouri Hospital College appears bright, aligning with the overarching goal of fostering a new generation of compassionate and expertly trained healthcare providers who can adapt to evolving industry demands and societal needs.
