Celebrating the Launch of Illinois' Largest Community Solar Project in Cherry Valley
A New Dawn for Solar Energy in Illinois
On November 5, 2026, state leaders gathered in Cherry Valley, Illinois, to mark a significant achievement in renewable energy: the launch of the Rockford Community Energy Initiative. This community solar project is one of the largest of its kind in ComEd's service area, designed to provide affordable and clean energy to local residents.
In attendance were State Senator Steve Stadelman and State Representative Maurice West, who along with representatives from ECA Power, local officials, and community leaders, performed a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate this vital milestone. The project spans an impressive 33.9 acres and has a capacity of 7.4 megawatts (MW). It is set to power more than 1,100 households and small businesses in the ComEd service territory.
Making Solar Accessible
The initiative allows households, renters, and smaller entities to subscribe to the solar energy generated without needing to install solar panels on their rooftops. This makes clean energy accessible for a wider community, fulfilling an essential gap in energy equity. By participating, subscribers can enjoy savings of up to 10% on their electricity bills, showcasing how such renewable projects can lead to direct financial benefits.
Senator Stadelman remarked, "The Illinois General Assembly has dedicated itself to advancing legislation that encourages renewable energy initiatives, and it is rewarding to witness these efforts translate into tangible developments that benefit our communities."
Furthermore, Gil Quiniones, President and CEO of ComEd, emphasized the importance of initiatives like this: "Northern Illinois is emerging as a front-runner in community solar projects, and through collaborations with partners like ECA Power and Luminace, we are committed to enhancing the connectivity of such projects to the grid. This is pivotal for fostering ongoing growth in clean energy initiatives across our region."
Revitalizing Local Communities
The Rockford Community Energy Initiative doesn't only symbolize the shift toward clean energy; it also represents a significant investment in community revitalization. Nestled in a state-designated R3 area, the project is pivotal for attracting new investments to regions targeted for enhancement. This initiative promises to deliver local benefits including lower electric bills for subscribers and increased tax revenue for the community, contributing to long-term infrastructural development.
ECA Power has also pledged $150,000 as part of its community benefit agreement with the Village of Cherry Valley to support the development, operation, and maintenance of an electric vehicle charging station, further enhancing the project's community focus.
Todd Fryatt, Founder and CEO of ECA Power, stated, "We believe that a project's success should not only be determined by the energy it generates but also by the value it brings to the local community. The Rockford Community Energy Initiative truly reflects our commitment towards offering affordable, locally generated energy while driving meaningful investments in the area."
The Future of Clean Energy
ECA Power, which has its headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts, has been a key player in renewable energy development over the last 12 years. With over 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy assets in its development pipeline, the company works closely with local landowners and communities to create impactful solar and storage projects.
ComEd, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation and one of the largest utility providers in the U.S., continues to lead in providing energy solutions for almost 11 million customers, significantly contributing to Illinois's shift toward renewable resources.
The launch of the Rockford Community Energy Initiative signifies a critical step forward in making solar energy more accessible and affordable, setting a precedent for future community-driven renewable energy projects across the country. As clean energy gains traction, initiatives like this demonstrate the benefits of collaboration among community leaders, policy advocates, and dedicated energy developers.
Together, they are not just powering homes; they are powering a comprehensive transition towards a more sustainable future, where energy equity is attainable for all.
