Equinix Launches SG6 Data Center in Singapore to Boost AI Capacity and Connectivity

Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the world's digital infrastructure leader, recently announced the inauguration of its sixth International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data center, named SG6, in Singapore. This new facility aims to bolster high-performance computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and facilitate data-intensive workloads that are increasingly demanded in today’s digital landscape. With more than 280 data centers worldwide, the opening of SG6 signifies a pivotal expansion in Equinix's global footprint, providing enterprises with the robust infrastructure they need to innovate, grow, and connect in an AI-driven economy.

As the trend of businesses investing heavily in AI and digital services accelerates, the demand for highly connected infrastructure is also rising. SG6 is ideally located in one of Asia-Pacific's most essential markets, positioning it as a critical hub for organizations looking to deploy distributed digital workloads across various regions. According to Adaire Fox-Martin, CEO and President of Equinix, "Singapore sits at the intersection of global commerce, digital technology, and sustainable development." She emphasized that this facility expands Equinix's presence in Singapore, where the company has invested for nearly 25 years.

The SG6 facility is designed under Singapore’s Data Centre Call for Application framework and incorporates advanced cooling technologies aimed at supporting high-density AI workloads. Notably, it features proprietary cooling systems and liquid-cooling capabilities, catering to the power-intensive nature of GPU infrastructures, which are quintessential for AI applications.

The opening of SG6 aligns with Equinix's Future First sustainability strategy, reinforcing its science-based commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2040 and 100% renewable energy coverage globally by 2030 across its retail IBX data centers. Equinix’s operations in Singapore have already maintained 100% renewable energy coverage since 2020. SG6 is designed to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.20 and is aiming for Green Mark Platinum certification. The facility integrates rooftop solar photovoltaic systems, rainwater harvesting capabilities, and lower-embodied-carbon construction materials, emphasizing efficient operations and responsible growth.

Cyrus Adaggra, President of Asia-Pacific Equinix, pointed out that the Asia-Pacific region is at the forefront of digital transformation, highlighting the escalating demand for high-performance digital infrastructure driven by AI adoption and cloud expansion. He reassured that SG6 enhances Equinix's ability to provide resilient and sustainable infrastructure, crucial for businesses scaling within the Asia-Pacific.

Equinix has invested around $290 million in SG6, which initially offers 8 MW of capacity with approximately 1,550 cabinets. Once fully operational, the facility is set to provide up to 20 MW of IT capacity. Furthermore, Equinix is set to introduce a Co-Innovation Facility (CIF) at SG6 in collaboration with the National University of Singapore by 2027, focusing on technologies that will advance data center sustainability and energy efficiency, such as liquid cooling and cognitive digital twins.

Since its entry into Singapore in 2002, Equinix has expanded from a single data center to six, forming one of Asia-Pacific's most interconnected digital infrastructure hubs. Its Singapore data centers connect enterprises to a vast ecosystem of cloud, IT, financial services, and telecommunication providers while enabling connectivity to global markets through over 17 subsea cable systems. This robust infrastructure empowers Equinix to meet the growing digital demands and serve customer needs effectively across the region.
