Connecting Urban and Local Communities: OFF TOKYO's Vision for 2026

Introduction

OFF TOKYO, operated by Shibire Co., has emerged as a pivotal hub for connecting urban life with local communities, challenging the notion that life can only be lived in Tokyo. Since its inception in April 2025, this local hub has attracted numerous people who resonate with the idea of living beyond the confines of metropolitan existence. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has visited or participated in our events and projects, as well as to the local governments and businesses that have collaborated with us.

The Purpose of OFF TOKYO

The initiative was designed not just to promote migration or increase participation in local communities but to create a space where urban and rural life can converge and thrive. OFF TOKYO aims to allow individuals to experience the culture, people, and industries of various regions in a tangible way, making the option of living beyond Tokyo a reality rather than just an abstract concept.

Highlights of 2025 Initiatives

As we look forward to the year 2026, we would like to highlight three standout initiatives from 2025 that garnered significant attention:

1. Dialogue between Local Leaders

Event: City Mayors and Town Heads Talk
We organized a dialogue event between mayors and town heads where they shared insights not only about policies and systems but also about their aspirations and challenges within their regions. This allowed participants from the metropolitan area to get to know local governments as more than just institutions—they were seen as individuals with shared concerns and hopes. This initiative also created new connections between local entities and potential participants in local community activity. For more details, visit: City Mayors Event.

2. Experiencing Local Culture through Cuisine

Event: Niigata Cuisine Experience
In a hands-on event focused on Niigata's food culture, we incorporated not only regional dishes but also local tableware from Sanjo City, illustrating the significance of local craftsmanship. By merging the experience of eating, using, and learning, we provided visitors with an insightful understanding of the region's lifestyle and industries. Many participants expressed that this experience allowed them to view the region in a multidimensional way. More information can be found here: Niigata Event.

3. Transforming Support through Experience

Event: Hometown Tax Donation Tasting Experience
Instead of merely explaining the system of hometown tax donations, we designed an experience where participants could taste and learn about the regions they were supporting. The event allowed attendees to engage directly with the regional charm, subsequently enhancing their willingness to donate and participate. This approach proved to be highly effective for both local governments and businesses involved. Further details are available at: Hometown Tax Event.
