Celebrating a Successful First Year of VetRec's AI Integration at NC State Veterinary Medicine
Celebrating a Successful First Year of VetRec at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine
In a significant milestone, NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and VetRec, the veterinary AI assistant, are celebrating their one-year partnership. This collaboration has seen impressive adoption rates and increased clinical use, signifying a stride in integrating artificial intelligence into veterinary training and practice.
Since its initiation in April 2025, VetRec has become a staple within over 20 clinical departments at NC State. Now, 233 users—including students, residents, doctors, and administrative staff—actively utilize the platform, highlighting its broad appeal and effectiveness. The enthusiasm surrounding VetRec has been particularly notable among students, who have taken on the role of advocates, encouraging faculty and resident participation. Uniquely, every user invited to the platform has engaged with it, resulting in zero unused accounts within the institution.
For clinical staff, VetRec has proven to be transformative. The AI documentation system has drastically reduced the amount of time spent on paperwork, allowing faculty and clinicians to allocate their efforts toward teaching, research, and high-quality patient care. As VetRec CEO Kevin Cohen remarked, “NC State College of Veterinary Medicine has been an outstanding partner since day one. It’s amazing to witness a leading veterinary institution seamlessly incorporate AI into clinical training, ensuring that students graduate equipped with essential AI skills.”
Joseph Evans, a D.V.M. and an Emergency and Critical Care Resident, highlighted the personal impact of VetRec on his practice. He stated, "In the ER and the ICU, my focus is on the patient and their family. VetRec has allowed me to engage more meaningfully by minimizing my time on the keyboard and maximizing my attention on them. The tool not only alleviates the stress of remembering extensive patient histories but also aids in maintaining clear and thorough medical records." The platform’s 'Records Recap' feature, he added, helps him manage complex cases effectively, enhancing his overall practice quality.
Starting from fundamental clinical services, VetRec's capabilities have expanded into specialties such as emergency and critical care, soft tissue surgery, dermatology, internal medicine, and large animal services. With new departments onboarded regularly, the trend indicates a steadfast growth trajectory as they approach the second year of operation.
Dr. Anthony Blikslager, Associate Dean and Director of Veterinary Medical Services, emphasized the organic growth of VetRec within the institution. "What excites me as a Hospital Director is that the interest in VetRec first sparked organically among certain early-adopter clinicians and has since spread throughout our entire team. VetRec now plays a crucial role in our strategy at NC State Veterinary Hospital to optimize efficiency while continuing to innovate with AI integration," he stated.
Cohen further noted, “NC State has demonstrated the potential of a full institutional commitment to AI integration in veterinary education. Partnering with them has been commendable, and we are keenly looking forward to the forthcoming year for the benefit of their students, faculty, and the animals they serve.”
Looking into the future, VetRec and NC State plan to enhance user adoption across additional departments, onboard new residents and students for the 2026 academic year, and further delineate what a comprehensive AI-powered veterinary education entails.
