Obesity Action Coalition Urges Cigna to Reconsider GLP-1 Coverage Termination for Employees

OAC Urges Cigna to Restore GLP-1 Coverage

The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) has taken a strong stance against Cigna's recent decision to terminate its coverage of GLP-1 medications used for weight management. This change, which came into effect on July 1, 2026, has had a profound impact on over 50,000 employees across the United States who rely on these crucial treatments for obesity management.

Upon learning about the termination of coverage, a significant number of employees expressed their frustration and concern, leading to an outpouring of support for reinstating the coverage. Nearly 600 Cigna employees signed a petition urging the company to reverse its decision, emphasizing that access to these medications is vital for their health and well-being. Despite this clear feedback from its workforce, Cigna has announced that it will uphold its decision, citing research and feedback from clinical leaders as the foundation for their choice.

Joe Nadglowski, President and CEO of the OAC, stressed the importance of recognizing the human aspect of this issue. "Cigna employees have spoken, and the company needs to listen," he stated. These medications are not merely numerical entries within a benefits program—they represent legitimate treatment options for individuals grappling with a chronic disease. Nadglowski underscores that the feedback from Cigna employees must be taken seriously and that the company should reconsider its stance regarding GLP-1 coverage.

The ramifications of Cigna's decision have already begun to manifest in the lives of their employees. Reports indicate that many individuals are now faced with the burden of paying out-of-pocket for medications they once accessed under their employer-sponsored coverage. For instance, one employee revealed that their monthly medication cost escalated from $25 to approximately $300 following the loss of coverage.

Cigna's role as a healthcare provider comes into question, especially considering its understanding of the necessity for comprehensive, science-based treatment for chronic conditions like obesity. While they have pointed to other resources, such as health coaching and lifestyle management programs, these options are not substitutes for medically approved treatments prescribed by healthcare professionals. The OAC firmly believes that individuals living with obesity should have access to scientifically supported treatment options, and Cigna should rethink its approach to employee health benefits in this context.

The OAC is encouraging Cigna to heed the calls of its employees and restore coverage for GLP-1 medications. In doing so, they would reaffirm their commitment to providing comprehensive care that aligns with best practices in managing chronic diseases.
