Launching Call for Creative Material Partners for Children's Department Store Event

Calling for Material Partners for the 'Kodomo Department Store'

The 'Kodomo Department Store,' a project orchestrated by Baby Toy and its Arm, the Art Design Lab, is set to launch with an exciting two-day co-creation event in Setagaya, Tokyo. This immersive creative experience is designed for children aged four and above, allowing them to express themselves and explore innovative ideas alongside adult mentors. The venue, HOME/WORK VILLAGE, provides a unique backdrop, harmonizing concepts of home and work to tackle the educational challenges we face today.

What to Expect at the Event

Over these two days, participants will engage with a myriad of over 100 different craft materials, fostering an atmosphere ripe for creativity and discovery. The event accentuates the importance of hands-on experiences, as children operate their crafting zone as 'Kodomo-tenchou' (Kids' Managers), while local volunteers step into the role of 'Otona-tenchou' (Adult Managers) to provide support and guidance. Here, barriers between age groups dissolve, allowing everyone to contribute to a shared creative endeavor.

The 'Kodomo Department Store' promises to transform waste materials into art. It calls upon businesses and organizations willing to become Material Partners, donating anything from leftover wood and fabric to packaging that ordinarily might be discarded. Every contribution plays a significant role in the children's artistic journey, fostering sustainable practices within the community.

A Message from Our Material Partners

One of our partners, Yonesan Company, a facility demonstrating the cycle of furniture reusability, expressed their enthusiasm: "We are excited to see how the small parts of repurposed furniture can be revitalized by the children’s creativity. It's rewarding to show how the concept of 'using up' brings joy and beauty to our lives."

A Creative Experience Unlike Any Other

The event will include a variety of programs that enrich the experience:

  • - Art Bar: Children and adults will collaborate as bartenders at the creative 'Art Bar,' using craftsmanship to serve guests in a festive atmosphere that celebrates art and communal ties.
  • - Open Studio: Explore the Art Design Lab’s workshop space and witness the makings of art through a 'not-yet-finished' exhibition. This allows for an immersive experience that welcomes visitors into the creative process.
  • - Panel Discussions: Enjoy engaging discussions with guest speakers around the themes of 'Art and Children', encouraging meaningful dialogue about the value of creativity in education.
  • - Super Press Conference: Young artists from the Art Design Lab will take center stage to share their development through individual portfolios named 'CREATIVE NOTE.' They will present their unique artistic journeys and results, showcasing their talents and thoughts.

A Confluence of Creativity and Community

In today's society, Setagaya Ward is rethinking educational approaches, focusing on aspects beyond traditional skill evaluations and fostering non-cognitive abilities such as collaboration and critical thinking. The depth of these skills is nurtured not just within schools but throughout the community at large. The 'Kodomo Department Store' embodies this philosophy by leveraging local partnership and engagement as a learning model, seeking to reshape how education can take root within the community.

With its emphasis on collaboration, children will develop autonomy, teamwork, and self-expression in a safe environment. All throughout the creative process, the ongoing learning journey will be visible through their portfolios, enriching the educational landscape and inspiring future generations.
