Outrage as Federal Funding Cuts Impact Legal Aid for Unaccompanied Children

IJC Condemns Reduction in Federal Support for Unaccompanied Children

On March 21, 2025, the Immigrant Justice Corps (IJC) expressed deep concern following the termination of federal funding for the Unaccompanied Children Program. This critical program has provided legal representation to thousands of unaccompanied minors navigating the immigration system. With the funding cuts, over 26,000 children who depend on legal assistance to navigate the complexities of immigration proceedings now face uncertainty regarding their rights and safety.

Jojo Annobil, the Executive Director of IJC, highlighted the absurdity of expecting vulnerable children, including toddlers and infants, to represent themselves in high-stakes immigration matters. These children often flee dire circumstances—violence, persecution, and human trafficking—seeking safety in a new country. The absence of legal representation not only jeopardizes their well-being but also threatens the integrity of the entire immigration system. Without knowledgeable advocates at their sides, these children are left to contend with formidable government prosecutors alone, exacerbating an already precarious situation.

The ramifications of these funding cuts are profound. The IJC employs over 150 fellows stationed across more than 30 states, providing not only legal representation but also age-appropriate education regarding the legal process, their rights, and obligations. The loss of federal funding diminishes their ability to support the vulnerable population of unaccompanied minors, many of whom have faced significant trauma prior to their arrival in the U.S. By stripping away these resources, the federal government is failing to protect those who need it most. The risk of increased harm and exploitation that these children face without proper legal aid is simply unacceptable.

In light of these developments, Annobil called on leaders across the political spectrum to advocate for the restoration of funding for the Unaccompanied Children Program. He warned that continued degradation of the immigration system inevitably leads to less safe and stable communities. Unaccompanied minors represent one of the most vulnerable segments of our society, and failing to allocate sufficient resources places them, and ultimately all of us, at greater risk. In light of such an injustice, IJC is reaffirming its commitment to defend the rights of these children and ensure their access to legal representation.

As this situation unfolds, IJC urges concerned citizens to take action by supporting their efforts to provide justice for immigrant children. They advocate for community involvement and donations, emphasizing that every contribution can help safeguard the rights of those who are most at risk. The message is clear: no child should have to navigate the treacherous waters of the immigration system alone.
