Satisfaction Soars: Kumamoto's Listening AI Supports Parenting Uncertainty

In a groundbreaking achievement, ZIAI, an AI startup based in Shibuya, Tokyo, has developed a listening AI algorithm that recorded a remarkable 97% satisfaction rate from parents in Kumamoto City. The initiative, held through the city's official LINE account designated for parenting support and involving around 20,000 participants, aimed to ease the burdens and uncertainties that come with raising children.

Background


Japan is experiencing a demographic crisis with decreasing birthrates. In response, the revised Child and Childcare Support Law and the Child Welfare Act, effective from April 2025, aim to implement a seamless support system from pregnancy to child-rearing. Meanwhile, in today’s increasingly nuclear family structures and weakened community bonds, many parents feel isolated and overwhelmed, struggling with uncertainties in their parenting journeys. Moreover, issues such as postpartum depression, exacerbated by hormonal fluctuations and the pressures of solo parenting, have emerged as significant societal challenges.

In this context, the need for emotional support and a listening ear is critical. This realisation prompted Kumamoto City to pioneer a project leveraging digital technology to assist parents facing childcare anxieties.

The Kumamoto City × ZIAI Experiment


Duration: January 21, 2025 – March 31, 2025
Participants: 20,000 residents registered on the official Kumamoto City LINE account for parenting support
Note: Access was initially limited to about 2,500 randomly selected participants until February 14.
Service Offered: An AI chat service provided 24/7 to engage and support parents dealing with their childcare concerns.

Results


Highlights


Despite the challenging circumstances surrounding parenting today, the results from the experiment are promising:
  • - Total Consultation Time: 283 hours—reflecting the total time parents spent sharing their worries with the AI.
  • - Total Interaction Turns: 1,478—indicating an average of about 9 exchanges per consultation.
  • - Satisfaction Rate: An impressive 97%—a testament to parents in their 20s to 50s appreciating the AI chat support.

Through these results, ZIAI's listening AI demonstrated its potential as not just a tool for solving problems but as a supportive companion for parents navigating the complexities of childcare.
