Refreshing Family Retreat for Fukushima Children in Shizuoka's Natural Setting

Family Retreat for Children Affected by Fukushima

The 'Waku Waku Picnic for Families' committee is organizing an inspiring retreat for children affected by the Fukushima disaster from July 25 to July 27, 2026, in the pristine Kuromata River in Shizuoka City. This initiative by the Shizuoka-based consumer cooperative Pal System aims to provide a refreshing experience filled with nature and joy, allowing families to take a break from their everyday worries.

A Round-Up of Activities

The event invites families from Fukushima, accommodating one parent and two elementary or middle school children, as they reconnect with nature and foster bonds with local volunteers. Participants will stay at a farmhouse inn, 'Kuromata Saku Heibei', where they will be surrounded by nature's soothing sounds and stunning starry skies over two nights.

Children will spend their time engaging in various water activities along the Kuromata River. They will get to experience exploring local wildlife, playing in the river, and even participating in fun fish-catching activities. Meals during this retreat will be a special highlight as families will get to try their hands at making soba noodles and enjoy a self-cooked barbecue, making unforgettable memories.

As part of the night's activities, participants will relish the joy of traditional firework displays and spaces for some star-gazing, under the clear summer sky. On the last day, the families will visit the renowned Ginkgo tree, estimated to be over 500 years old, enjoying the scenic views from the observation deck.

Moreover, they will wrap up their special trip with a visit to a local tea café to savor Shizuoka's famous tea, creating beautiful memories to take back home.

Importance of Community Support

Founded in 2012, the 'Waku Waku Picnic for Families' committee, supported by the Fukushima Children's Support Fund, has continued to work tirelessly to organize these therapeutic events in Shizuoka. Pal System Shizuoka has been a part of this initiative since 2014, providing food supplies and assisting in coordinating activities. The project has managed to host 18 events until August 2025 and has welcomed over 300 participants, showcasing a remarkable commitment by the organization.

Due to the pandemic, the scale of these trips was reduced, but the program returned with sustainable practices, utilizing fundraising and donations to minimize the economic burden on families.

The Shizuoka consumer cooperative aims to strengthen community connections and provide continuous support to those affected by significant disasters. They believe in sharing the strength of cooperation and are committed to standing with the victims of the Fukushima disaster.
