Quality Over Duration: Insights into Men's Paternity Leave Satisfaction
With November 19 marking 'Good Parenting Day' in Japan, Medix Inc., based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, conducted a survey in collaboration with the paternity community 'Papaiku', focusing on men's satisfaction with paternity leave. The survey highlighted that satisfaction rates tend to be influenced more by the quality of time spent (the 'quality') rather than the duration of time taken off (the 'length'). Notably, fathers who took leave for more than a year or between three to six months reported the highest levels of satisfaction.
Key Findings
Satisfaction Peaks at Over a Year
Among respondents who took paternity leave, those who were off for more than a year reported the highest satisfaction, scoring an impressive 9.7 out of 10 on average. Many cited benefits such as improved parenting and household skills and stronger family bonds. Comments such as, “I was able to focus on family and parenting after stepping away from my busy job,” shared by a father in his 50s, exemplify the value placed on quality family interaction. Another in his 40s expressed that they valued being present for their child’s growth, stating, “I could witness my child's development firsthand rather than through videos.”
The Balanced Period: Three to Six Months
The three to six month leave period garnered highly positive remarks, with an average satisfaction score of 9.6. This duration is perceived as a time that allows enough adjustment to a new lifestyle without overwhelming work re-entry burdens. Comments reflect sentiments such as, “We spent valuable and concentrated time together as a family,” from a father in his 40s. Participants noted that during this balanced period, everyday routines became more established, leading to closer relationships within the family. Despite concerns over a shorter period leading to a rapid return to work, and longer durations possibly introducing worries about job gaps and income instability, the three to six month timeline provided a psychological and financial buffer against stress, resulting in overwhelmingly positive feedback.
Barriers to Taking Leave
When examining those who did not take paternity leave, their reasons coalesced around four main issues: financial concerns, family dynamics, workplace atmosphere, and career fears. Distinct differences emerged when examining male and female perspectives. Men predominantly cited worries over financial instability, while women mentioned their domestic situations as the primary concern. A 40-something mother noted, “In the end, I felt that spending all that time at home would just lead to more stress.” These sentiments reflect ongoing disparities in household responsibilities and expectations across genders.
Influencing Factors: Purpose and Engagement
The survey further revealed that satisfaction was not solely a function of the duration of leave; it was also heavily influenced by the quality of how that time was spent. Fathers that entered their leave with clear goals—such as wanting to treasure family time or develop parenting skills—reported an average satisfaction of 9.5, which significantly surpassed the 8.6 averaged by those without clear objectives.
Initiatives by Medix to Improve Leave Quality

Moreover, 61.5% of these individuals took more than six months off. The firm is committed to enhancing the paternity leave experience through several initiatives:

- - In-House Parent Lunches: Offering avenues to share challenges and experiences
