Empowering Mothers through Home-Based Work
The community
Mamas Maru hosted the
Home-Based Work Support Seminar for mothers raising children with disabilities on December 17, 2025, at the
Bunshokan in Yamagata City, Japan. This initiative marks the first collaboration between YUI Mama, a staff member of Mamas Maru and a parent of a child with disabilities, and a freelance worker known as Naka-san.
The Background of the Event
Many mothers raising children with disabilities often feel they cannot work outside the home due to various challenges. Common issues include:
- - Instability of the child’s health, making consistent outside work difficult.
- - Difficulty finding reliable childcare options.
- - Lack of mental and physical stamina, leading to feelings of being overwhelmed and unfocused on work.
These factors create a reality where many mothers feel they must give up on their careers and thus lose their connection to society. The seminar aims to introduce the option of
working from home, to inspire these mothers to take the first step towards personal fulfillment and connection.
Seminar Structure
The event was structured in two parts, focusing on both mental preparedness and practical steps:
Mindset Preparation: Led by YUI Mama
As a parent of a child with disabilities, YUI Mama shared her own journey, detailing the struggles and conflicts she faced before starting her home-based work. She spoke candidly about feelings of inadequacy during challenging times and how a shift in her mindset allowed her to take small but significant steps towards her goal of working from home.
Practical Implementation: Led by Naka-san
With his experience in freelance work, Naka-san presented practical strategies for entering the world of home-based opportunities. Key topics included:
- - Types of home-based work available.
- - Concrete steps for beginners to start working.
- - Maintaining a sustainable work pace.
Participant Feedback
The seminar received positive responses from attendees:
- - “Hearing personal stories made me feel I can try too!”
- - “Understanding that perfection isn’t needed eased my anxiety about starting home work.”
- - “It was a warm atmosphere where I felt safe bringing my child.”
- - “The wealth of information showed that they genuinely care about mothers.”
Organizer's Reflection
YUI Mama reflected on her journey, expressing initial despair at the thought of never being able to work again, followed by feelings of self-blame. Through connections with others who supported her, she gradually recognized that working from home was a viable option. Her hopes for the seminar stem from a desire to share this realization with other mothers in similar situations.
Future Plans
Mamas Maru plans to continue hosting this seminar monthly, providing opportunities for participants to learn about:
- - Mindset preparation before starting work
- - Basic computer skills
- - Experiences in various home-based job options
- - Ongoing support to help each mother take the necessary steps toward employment.
Our Mission
Rather than pressuring participants to find work immediately, we prioritize creating an environment where mothers can believe, “I might be able to do this.” We aim to provide ongoing, personalized support for each mother’s unique journey.
