Celebrate Black History Month at The Henry Ford

This February, The Henry Ford invites everyone to partake in a month dedicated to recognizing the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. This year's festivities center around the theme of African Americans and labor, underscoring the significant impact that Black innovators, activists, and entrepreneurs have had on our culture and society.

A Weekend of Inspiration
Each weekend throughout the month, the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation will host a series of engaging events including talks, live performances, and curated tours. Noteworthy appearances include an artistic showcase by Phillip Simpson, the celebrated founder of the Smile Brand, scheduled for February 9. On February 15, the spotlight turns to The TeMaTe Institute for Black Dance Culture, highlighting the vitality and significance of African American dance forms, followed by the dynamic Michigan Krump Movement.

On February 16, attendees can enjoy performances from Marygrove College’s Repertory and Junior Companies. This day will also feature live music from the talented musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Cole and Harper Randolph, performing at the Museum Plaza at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1 p.m.

Discover Black History Through Artifacts
An exciting addition this year is the new daily tour titled Reframing History: Uncovering Black Stories, which allows visitors to delve into the rich narratives surrounding artifacts within The Henry Ford's extensive collection. This tour takes place daily at 1 p.m. in the museum plaza, enriching the visitor experience by revealing the critical ways in which Black history is intertwined with the innovation the museum represents.

Reflecting on Important Milestones
This February also marks the 60th anniversary of the pivotal Selma to Montgomery marches, including the infamous Bloody Sunday, as well as the passage of the historic Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Henry Ford’s recent acquisition of the Jackson House connects museum-goers more closely with this important chapter in American history. Visitors will have the chance to explore this narrative further through the We Shall Overcome: The 60th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, opening on February 22. This Collection Spotlight features artifacts that celebrate this landmark legislation and tells the compelling story of Dr. Sullivan and Mrs. Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson, who played crucial roles in the civil rights movement by providing support to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his allies.
