Discover the Rich Cultural Heritage at Okayama University's Third Walking Event

Okayama University, located in the heart of Okayama City, is proud to announce its upcoming Third Walking Event, scheduled for February 14, 2026. This event promises to be a unique experience that connects participants to the region's rich history, culture, and natural environment while fostering community engagement and personal well-being.

Event Overview

The walking event is organized by Okayama University, under the leadership of President Yasuyuki Nasu. It is designed to encourage community members to participate and interact while learning about the historical significance of the area. This year's theme focuses on 'The Origins of Rice Cultivation and Population Trends', spotlighting the connection between agriculture and societal development.

Participants can expect a comprehensive itinerary that includes:
  • - An insightful museum tour conducted by expert curators, lasting for approximately 30 minutes.
  • - A guided walk around the Tsushima ruins, where attendees can immerse themselves in the historical landscapes that have shaped the region. They can choose between two walking routes: one focusing on the ruins and another that leads directly to J Terrace Café for a delightful dining experience.
  • - Enjoying an evening meal at J Terrace Café, where participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences while indulging in local cuisine for about one and a half hours.

During the café dinner, participants will be treated to a presentation by emeritus professor Hiroshi Makino, the former president of Okayama University, showcasing photographs taken during his explorations of the Kibi road historical sites. Attendees will also receive insights from graduate student Natsue Shiraishi about research findings from Professor Takashi Horiuchi's social psychology laboratory, emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning and physical activity for older adults as highlighted in a recent press release.

Goals and Objectives

The Third Walking Event aims to cultivate intergenerational dialogue and collaborative learning among community members, reinforcing the principles of J-PEAKS (the Regional Core and Distinctive Research University Enhancement Initiative). By fostering rich educational experiences, Okayama University seeks to enhance well-being in local communities through innovative social practices.

Emerging from a press release by Shiraishi and Professor Horiuchi, the event also aligns with the university's aspiration of creating a Well-being Society through Innovation. In collaboration with the Tatekizuki Renaissance Initiative and the Kibi Association, this gathering promotes health and educational opportunities for middle-aged and older adults.
