SBCA Showcases Innovative Housing Solutions at HUD's 2025 Event

The Structural Building Components Association (SBCA) is proud to announce its participation at the HUD's 2025 Innovative Housing Showcase on the National Mall, showcasing cutting-edge solutions in response to America's ongoing housing crisis.

The event kicked off over the weekend, starting September 6 and will continue until September 10, offering a platform for industry leaders, government officials, and the general public to explore innovative housing solutions. One of the significant highlights of the showcase is the impressive "Big Green House"—a collaboration between SBCA, the National Framers Council (NFC), and 84 Lumber. This two-story duplex spans 3,000 square feet, providing attendees with a tangible example of the benefits that offsite manufactured structural components bring to the construction process.

As the housing challenges in the United States grow, the housing industry must adapt to meet the increasing demand for availability, affordability, and accessibility. In his remarks, Jess Lohse, Executive Director of SBCA, emphasized the need for innovative approaches to construction, stating, "It is incredibly important to be part of events like this. Bringing together those who can progress housing in this country and featuring the different methodologies and technologies that can do that is the best way to bring attention to solutions that already exist."

The use of structural components – including roof trusses, floor trusses, and wall panels – enables builders to frame homes more efficiently. This systemized approach leads to measurable improvements in time savings, labor efficiency, and material use. The SBCA's demonstration at HUD's showcase illustrates that whether it’s for a single-family residence or a large multi-family building, the process of componentized framing stands out as an effective method.

By constructing the Big Green House in less than 12 hours, SBCA highlighted the scalability and adaptability of building with components. According to Lohse, "With this nation in the midst of a housing crisis, providing scalable and available solutions is key. Components represent a proven way to deliver more housing, and they are ready-to-go solutions for expanding housing availability across the nation."

In addition to showcasing innovative building techniques, the event drew a diverse audience—from Members of Congress to home builders and architects—indicating the importance of collaborative efforts in finding effective solutions to housing issues. The engagement with attendees from varied backgrounds allows for a broader discussion about the strategies that can utilize existing technologies to address the escalating housing crisis effectively.

The SBCA's presence at the HUD event illuminates its commitment to promoting the manufacturing of structural building components and ensuring that these innovations are visible to stakeholders who can influence change in the industry. As a trade association, SBCA represents a wide range of manufacturers, contributing to the continuity and professionalism of the structural building component sector.

It is crucial for the construction industry to leverage innovations such as those showcased by SBCA to meet the pressing needs of housing in the United States. Envisioning a future where building with components becomes the norm rather than the exception is not just wishful thinking—it's a tangible goal that the industry can work towards together.
