Event Report: HR Data Utilization Workshop
On May 13, 2025, Trustyyle Co., Ltd. hosted an event titled "Unlocking HR Data Utilization: Transforming Practices in Human Capital Management Era" at their community space, HR Library, located in Chuo, Tokyo. The event featured Takuya Hyakuno, the CEO of Matilda Books, as the main speaker. With extensive experience as an organizational human resources consultant specializing in M&A and talent development programs, Hyakuno shared practical insights into HR data utilization.
Event Overview
1. Trends in Human Capital Disclosure and the Shift Towards "Data-Driven HR"
Recently, there has been a growing emphasis among publicly listed companies on human capital management and disclosure. Stakeholders are increasingly demanding quantitative HR-related data, including metrics like "investment in human resources," "employee turnover rates," and "proportion of women in management positions." At the start of the seminar, Hyakuno highlighted the increasing importance of HR departments communicating data effectively. However, many organizations still face challenges, such as inconsistent data management on Excel, varying levels of detail across departments, and reliance on unstructured qualitative data for exit interviews. Hyakuno stressed that it is crucial to start collecting relevant data with accessible methods rather than aiming for perfection from the onset.
2. Foundations of HR Data Collection: Starting Small with Online Surveys and Spreadsheets
The seminar continued with practical advice on collecting HR metrics related to recruitment, evaluations, placement, skills, engagement, and turnover. Hyakuno explained that merely aggregating data into a certain format could significantly advance the hypothesis testing regarding organizational challenges. He emphasized the importance of not solely depending on free-form responses and encouraged the use of structured questions and numerical options whenever possible. By consistently applying the same questions and formats, organizations can track changes over time effectively.
3. From Data Analysis to Internal Recommendations: Tailored Presentations and Narratives
In the second half of the seminar, real data was used to formulate hypotheses concerning potential issues such as "lack of communication leading to a perceived absence of growth leading to young employees leaving the organization." This section illustrated how organizations could quickly implement feedback skill training for management based on data-driven insights. The key takeaway from this segment was the step-by-step approach: First, present data; second, hypothesize causes; and third, propose solutions.
4. Advancing Data Utilization: Implementing Tools and Leveraging Expertise
Hyakuno underscored the value of starting small but also presented options for more sophisticated analysis tools and external expertise when necessary. Examples included solutions that visualize dialogue logs during training or monitor engagement fluctuations in real-time to identify participant disengagement trends.
Participants' Feedback
The event garnered positive feedback from attendees, with many expressing their appreciation for gaining insights into data analysis. Comments included reflections on the risks of relying on intuition in HR, the importance of setting a clear purpose, and practical tips for categorizing and collecting data incrementally. Participants acknowledged that mastering data presentation and storytelling could enhance their influence within the organization.
