Special Guest Event for the Eustyle Severe Disability Support Seminar
Eustyle's popular online seminar series, "Eustyle Care Severe Disability Support Seminar," is once again offering special sessions in 2026. After a successful launch in 2025, these free monthly online seminars are aimed at providing valuable information for caregivers and professionals in the field of disability and medical care.
In March, we are excited to announce a special guest session featuring Miwa Nakamura, a dedicated mother from Nakano City, Tokyo. Miwa is raising her son, Sota, who has a rare and severe disease affecting only 1 in 850,000 individuals. Sota requires continuous medical care due to a tracheostomy, and Miwa and her husband have tirelessly balanced the demands of intensive night-time medical care with family and work commitments for over a decade.
As Miwa and Sota transitioned to school, they confronted alarming concerns about the future, specifically the challenges presented by the so-called "18-year wall." This phenomenon highlights a pressing issue many families face in Japan: after graduating from high school, children with severe physical and medical needs often find themselves in a precarious situation with limited options for continued support and care environments where their individuality can thrive.
In an effort to address this issue, Miwa has initiated a crowdfunding campaign to visit Egmont Højskole, a school in Denmark known for integrating children with and without disabilities. This visit aims to inspire solutions for creating safe and nurturing environments for children with severe medical needs as they transition into adulthood, signaling a new beginning for families facing the daunting gap in services.
The Eustyle Severe Disability Support team has noticed a growing number of inquiries from families with medical care children. Our mission is to explore how we can support children under 18 who do not qualify for the severe disability support system, as well as to share information and practical case studies centered on providing long-term care in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Each guest speaker session is brought to life by the collaboration between Eustyle and advocacy groups like Patto Potto, dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with severe disabilities. The upcoming session on March 18th will feature Miwa, who will share insights on her family’s journey and the importance of community support.
