PMI U.S. Launches 'Thanks for Giving' Campaign to Honor Community Service in Virginia
Philip Morris International's U.S. operations, known as PMI U.S., has officially introduced the "Thanks for Giving" initiative aimed at fostering community service throughout Virginia. This campaign, launched just in time for the Thanksgiving celebrations and the globally recognized #GivingTuesday, serves as a call to action for Virginians to recognize and contribute to the charitable organizations and individuals who are dedicated to building stronger communities across the state.
In light of the holiday season, which emphasizes gratitude and generosity, the network encourages individuals to reflect not only on giving during the festive period but making it a constant in their lives. Marian Salzman, Senior Vice President at PMI U.S., noted the importance of sustained generosity, stating, "While #GivingTuesday initiated as one day focused on kindness, true impact arises when generosity is adopted as a continuous lifestyle. At PMI U.S., we are committed to this attitude and have demonstrated it through our contributions exceeding $35 million since 2022."
The campaign has achieved commendable results, having channeled over $1,460,000 into 101 Virginia-based organizations targeting community needs. Core areas of support include over $1 million aimed at economic empowerment programs, alongside funds allocated for veterans' assistance and disaster relief efforts. This ongoing financial support empowers local charities to drive impactful changes that directly enhance people's lives.
Organizations such as Feed More have already illustrated the urgency and effectiveness of this campaign. Aaron McClung, Chief Development Officer of Feed More, expressed the significance of this support, explaining that rising food needs have led them to procure extra healthy proteins and staples to assist families throughout the holiday period. He emphasized that PMI U.S.'s contributions will enhance their ability to meet the community's demands effectively.
Other generous recipients of donations in 2025 include prominent organizations like United Way of Greater Richmond, CARITAS, GoochlandCares, and Lets Go Services, all contributing to the collective mission of improving Virginia communities.
The "Thanks for Giving" initiative also highlights PMI's WeCare program, a unique initiative that allows employees to nominate nonprofits to receive company-funded donations. This year alone, the program allocated over $1,860,000 to more than 400 local organizations across 44 states and the District of Columbia, further reinforcing PMI U.S.'s pledge to proactive citizenship.
The impact of employee engagement cannot be understated. PMI U.S. staff members directed over $177,000 in company-sponsored donations towards more than 50 nonprofit organizations in their state, including influential local groups such as Hope for the Warriors and the Richmond Animal League. The desire to offer support and recognition to communities has sparked a significant shift in employee involvement, with participation levels surging by 400% compared to previous years.
The essence of the "Thanks for Giving" campaign lies within PMI U.S.'s practical approach to philanthropy—an approach centered on listening, investing wisely, and collaborating with those who consistently work towards positive change. PMI U.S. asserts that contributing to communities is not merely a seasonal obligation but a year-round commitment to fostering change.
In its continuous pursuit of advancing a smoke-free nation, PMI U.S. remains devoted to providing smoke-free alternatives and enjoys a presence across America that includes employing over 3,000 individuals and operating manufacturing plants in Owensboro, Kentucky, and Wilson, North Carolina.
