A-Rod to Inspire at Sickle Cell Disease Research Symposium in Florida
On June 5–7, 2026, the Foundation for Sickle Cell Disease Research (FSCDR) will host its 20th Annual Sickle Cell Disease Research and Educational Symposium at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This significant event will feature none other than Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez, the legendary 14-time MLB All-Star and 2009 World Series Champion with the New York Yankees. A-Rod’s role as a speaker will undoubtedly add prestige to the symposium, bringing visibility and encouragement to the fight against sickle cell disease (SCD).
Dr. Lanetta Bronté, President and CEO of FSCDR, expressed enthusiasm about A-Rod’s involvement, stating, "His participation is a meaningful moment of visibility and encouragement as we kick off this year's symposium." As someone who has navigated the pressures of a high-profile career, Rodriguez's insights can resonate deeply with attendees, offering inspiration to both the medical community and supporters of Sickle Cell Warriors.
The 2026 symposium carries the theme, "The Golden Age," aiming to unite physicians, researchers, healthcare professionals, and advocates in addressing crucial clinical and translational questions surrounding sickle cell disease. The agenda will include sessions that cover a range of topics, including precision therapeutics, patient-centered outcomes, public health strategies, and future directions in sickle cell disease treatment.
In addition to A-Rod, other notable speakers include ESPN analyst and retired NFL Super Bowl champion Ryan Clark, who will deliver the Warrior Keynote address on June 5. On June 7, the Foundation Keynote will be presented by EGOT-winning actress Viola Davis, further elevating the event’s profile. The collective experience of these speakers emphasizes the importance of advocacy and awareness surrounding this underfunded and underserved medical condition.
Sickle cell disease, the most prevalent inherited blood disorder in the United States, affects over 100,000 Americans and millions worldwide. Despite significant advancements made in research and treatment options, the battle against the disease continues as it has received inadequate funding and support throughout its history. FSCDR aims to combat this by providing not just healthcare but education and community-centered support aimed at improving the quality of life for those affected by the disease.
Founded in 2012, FSCDR operates a critical network of 15 Sickle Cell Centers of Excellence across Florida, serving one of the highest-density populations affected by sickle cell disease in the country. The annual symposium functions as a global forum for collaboration in scientific research, healthcare education, and innovation in sickle cell disease treatment.
The participation of influential figures such as A-Rod, Clark, and Davis highlights the growing movement to raise awareness and generate support for SCD – transforming the narrative surrounding this condition from one of limitation to one of hope and possibility.
