Understanding the Refugee Crisis: A Workshop for High School Students



On August 3rd and 6th, 2026, AAR Japan is hosting an insightful workshop aimed at high school students, focusing on the pressing issues surrounding global refugees. With the number of refugees reaching a staggering 111.7 million, understanding their plight has never been more critical. This workshop aims to illuminate the realities of refugees through the eyes of dedicated AAR Japan staff, offering an immersive experience that combines informative talks with engaging group activities.

Who Should Attend?


This workshop is perfect for students who are:
  • - Interested in supporting refugees internationally
  • - Curious about international cooperation and NGO work
  • - Seeking insights into the actual conditions of refugee camps, as seen on television
  • - Unsure about topics for their scholarly inquiry reports
  • - Looking for themes to approach for comprehensive entrance exams at the university level
  • - Aspiring to work in international cooperation.

Workshop Details


  • - Dates: August 3rd (Monday) and August 6th (Thursday), 2026
  • - Time: Each day from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM
  • - Location: AAR Japan Tokyo Office, 6th Floor, Community Space (2-12-2 Kamiyamaze, Shinagawa, Tokyo, 2-minute walk from Meguro Station)
  • - Participation Fee: 3,000 yen (to be paid in cash on the day)
Note: If the participation fee poses a financial challenge, please consult with the office for assistance.
  • - Registration: Participants must register through the provided form; spots are limited to 20 students per session, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch, though a convenience store is available on the first floor of the office building. For those interested, certificates of completion will also be issued upon request.

Workshop Program Overview


1. Learn About the Refugee Issues (Approximately 1.5 hours)


AAR staff will provide a unique perspective on refugee conditions, differing from typical media portrayals. The session includes:
  • - An introduction to the refugee crisis
  • - Personal testimonies from refugees

2. Reflect on the Topics (Approximately 1.5 hours)


In this segment, students will explore the various challenges individual refugees face, using AAR’s projects in Africa as discussion points.

3. Take Action: Group Works (Approximately 1.5 hours)


Students will break into small groups of 4-6 to discuss practical steps they can take in their school lives to support refugees. This collaborative effort will inspire them to envision how they can contribute positively to this pressing issue.
