Comerica Bank and Grand Rapids Griffins Tackle Food Insecurity
In a remarkable initiative to combat food insecurity,
Comerica Bank has partnered with the
Grand Rapids Griffins. Over the next six weeks, they aim to support the mission of
Kids' Food Basket (KFB) by conducting a community food drive in West Michigan. This collaboration not only highlights the importance of supporting local children and families but also showcases the power of community-driven solutions.
The Details of the Community Food Drive
Starting on
September 22 and running through
November 1, the food drive encourages community members to donate specific food items at selected Comerica Bank locations throughout West Michigan. Donations will benefit Kids' Food Basket, an organization dedicated to fighting childhood hunger. Items requested include fruit cups, pretzels, pudding cups, cheese crackers, meat sticks, and Cheerios. KFB requests that donors avoid canned goods and items requiring heat preparation, ensuring that all contributions are accessible and nutritious for children.
A Philanthropic Mission
Debra Hanes, Senior Vice President and Retail Regional Director at Comerica Bank, emphasized the significance of the food drive: “Kids' Food Basket makes a difference in West Michigan every day through its passionate commitment to reduce childhood hunger and support families in our communities.” This initiative not only aims to eliminate food insecurity but also reinforces the bonds within the community, encouraging teamwork for a noble cause.
Bob Kaser, Vice President of Broadcasting for the Grand Rapids Griffins, added, “With an incredibly meaningful mission, Kids' Food Basket partnered with Comerica continues to have a remarkable impact on West Michigan kids and their families.” He expressed that the partnership resonates strongly with Griffins fans, fostering a sense of community and goodwill.
The Importance of Addressing Food Insecurity
According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, over
1.42 million people in Michigan experience food insecurity, with more than
41,000 children under 18 affected in the Ottawa, Allegan, Muskegon, and Kent counties. By addressing these statistics, the partnership between Comerica, the Griffins, and Kids' Food Basket is effectively working to transform lives and create a brighter future.
KFB's commitment spans over two decades, driven by customized programs that break down barriers to food access.
Tamara VanderArk-Potter, VP of Philanthropy at Kids' Food Basket, revealed, “This year, we are serving more meals than ever before as the need increases in our community.” The collaboration is seen as a “hat trick of an opportunity,” emphasizing that local children emerge as the true winners.
Donation Drop-Off Locations
Community members can drop off their food donations at various Comerica banking centers, including:
- - Grand Rapids (Campau Square, Cascade, Four Mile-Alpine, Plainfield)
- - Grandville (Wilson Ave)
- - Kentwood (52nd-Kalamazoo, Woodland Mall)
- - Muskegon (Eastside-Muskegon)
- - Muskegon Heights (Sanford)
- - North Muskegon (Center St)

Each donor who contributes five items will receive a ticket voucher for an upcoming Griffins game, further incentivizing community participation.
A Legacy of Commitment
Comerica Bank boasts the longest continuous presence in Michigan banking, dating back more than
175 years. It prides itself on supporting charitable organizations and contributing positively to local communities. The Grand Rapids Griffins, with a rich history in the American Hockey League, remain dedicated to the celebration of sports and service within the community.
