Hyundai Motor Celebrates the Legacy of STELLAR and SONATA
Hyundai Motor Company has recently launched an exciting heritage campaign to honor its iconic mid-size sedans, the STELLAR and SONATA, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the SONATA. This initiative aims not only to reflect on the historic journey of these vehicles but also to engage with fans and celebrate the long-standing relationship between the brand and its dedicated customers.
The STELLAR, introduced in 1983, represents a significant milestone as Hyundai’s second proprietary passenger car, following the PONY. It marked a critical phase in South Korea’s automotive independence by showcasing advanced technology and innovation. The SONATA followed in 1985, initially serving as a luxury variant of the STELLAR, but it quickly established its own identity and has since become Hyundai's longest-running model, evolving through eight generations.
Exhibition at piknic in Seoul
To kick off the heritage campaign, Hyundai will be hosting a special exhibition at piknic, a creative space near Namsan Park in Seoul, from September 25, 2025, to January 4, 2026. The exhibition features a fully restored 1988 STELLAR, a remarkable model launched as part of Hyundai’s involvement as the official vehicle supplier for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to see this classic vehicle alongside a collection of archival materials, including technical drawings, catalogues, and research & development records that provide insight into the engineering behind these automotive legends.
RETRACE Magazine Release and Booking Talk
As part of the campaign, Hyundai introduces the second edition of its heritage publication, RETRACE Magazine, focusing on the stories intertwined with the STELLAR and SONATA. The magazine includes 16 original pieces, featuring essays, interviews, and personal reflections from long-time customers who share their experiences with these cars. This edition aims to foster a deeper understanding of the significance of these vehicles in the lives of their owners while highlighting the extensive technological advancements made by Hyundai over the decades.
Additionally, the heritage campaign will include a book talk event scheduled for October 18th at Hyundai Motorstudio Seoul. This gathering will provide an opportunity for discussion and engagement with fans of the brand as well as automotive enthusiasts.
Exclusive Merchandise and Collectibles
During the exhibition period, exclusive merchandise commemorating the STELLAR and SONATA will be available for purchase at the piknic venue, select Hyundai Motorstudio locations in Goyang, Seoul, and Busan, and the Hyundai Collection official website. This merchandise will include unique items designed to allow customers to celebrate Hyundai's rich legacy and share their passion for the brand.
Hyundai Motor’s heritage campaign represents more than just a celebration of its past; it is a promise to continue advancing the future of automobiles through innovation and customer engagement. With ongoing developments in technology and design, Hyundai aims to create an even stronger connection with its audience through these nostalgic elements.
