Teamsters File Unfair Labor Practice Charge Against Corewell Health East
In a significant move that underscores ongoing labor tensions, Teamsters Local 2024 has officially filed an unfair labor practice complaint against Corewell Health East. This legal action highlights the company’s persistent refusal to engage in fair negotiations regarding a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) affecting its nursing staff.
The complaint has arisen primarily from Corewell's policy requiring Teamsters nurses to deplete their accrued paid time off (PTO) before they are allowed to utilize unpaid leave for negotiation sessions. Mike Smith, the lead negotiator and trustee of Local 2024, voiced strong concerns over this policy, describing it as a targeted attack on unionized nurses who are merely striving for equitable treatment within their workplace. “For the past six months, Corewell has been forcing Teamsters nurses to exhaust their accrued paid time off before allowing them to use unpaid leave for negotiation dates,” Smith stated, emphasizing the detrimental impact on nurses who are balancing their personal finances with their professional advocacy.
Last month, despite the ongoing disputes, negotiations between the Teamsters and Corewell did yield some positive advancements. An agreement was reached that offered several retroactive economic benefits to Teamsters nurses. These improvements included a wage increase implemented in March 2025, adjustments based on base pay market analysis, and bonuses to help offset the hardships faced by the nursing community. In addition, there were significant increases in shift differentials and matching contributions to the 403(b) retirement plans, showcasing the union's effectiveness in securing better working conditions for its members.
Sarah Johnson, a member of the negotiating committee, echoed the sentiments of her fellow nurses during these challenging times. “The way Corewell is treating its nurses is unacceptable. We’re the ones holding these hospitals together, caring for patients day in and day out,” she expressed. Johnson's comments reflect the frustration felt by many in the profession who believe they have contributed significantly to their communities and deserve the respect and support of their employer.
With contract negotiations still somewhat in turmoil, the Teamsters are gearing up for critical bargaining sessions scheduled for September 17-18 in Detroit. The overarching goal is to secure a fair first contract that addresses essential issues, including an improved economic framework and enhanced working conditions. The upcoming bargaining dates are anticipated to be crucial as both parties prepare to revisit crucial topics that have prompted this labor dispute.
Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has grown to represent more than 1.3 million hardworking women and men across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Their mission focuses on improving working conditions and advocating for fair labor laws that benefit all employees.
