The Miami Takeover: A Celebration of Go-Go Music and Black Art
The vibrant city of Miami Beach is gearing up for an exciting showcase of culture and creativity with the upcoming
17th Annual Miami Takeover. Scheduled for
July 26th, this year’s event will commemorate
50 years of go-go music and feature an impressive array of Black art. In collaboration with the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, the
Art of Go-Go Culture Fest promises a night filled with electrifying performances and a unique artistic experience, all set against the backdrop of the iconic
Miami Beach Bandshell.
From 5 PM to 10 PM, guests will be treated to live performances from renowned groups such as the
Junkyard Band,
Black Passion Band, and
Top5 Band. These artists have helped shape the sound and vibe of go-go music, which originated from Washington D.C. and has significantly influenced contemporary musical landscapes.
“This is not just a festival; it’s a cultural movement. We’re here to celebrate go-go music, which is the heartbeat of Washington D.C., as well as the rich creative expression of Black artists,” said
Wylie Kynard, co-founder of The Miami Takeover. The festival is designed to be an immersive experience, allowing attendees to both enjoy the music and witness the artistry that defines the Black experience in America.
This year's festival is proudly sponsored by
PURE Performance Water, known for its premium natural spring water infused with essential antioxidants and nutrients. The partnership with PURE indicates a commitment to health and well-being throughout the festivities, ensuring that attendees are energized and refreshed as they enjoy the artistic offerings.
Not only will the festival feature pulsating music, but there will also be a significant focus on visual arts. An expansive art exhibit will showcase works from local South Florida artists, including interactive installations created by talents like
Marcus Blake,
Rod Royal, and
Demont Pinder. Highlighting over
35 unique pieces of artwork, the exhibit will also include live painting sessions, allowing attendees to engage with the artists directly.
Beyond the music and art, the
Miami Takeover has a robust schedule featuring eight exhilarating events over four days. Kicking off with an
HBCU celebration at
The Urban on July 25th, the festival will host multiple pool parties, comedy shows, and even a beach clean-up initiative. A notable event will be a children's educational dental health session in collaboration with
Colgate and the
Miami Beach Police Athletic League, further emphasizing the festival’s commitment to community engagement and service.
“By merging the Caribbean soul of Miami with Washington D.C.’s go-go crank, we aim to deliver a fantastic concert experience alongside meaningful community initiatives,” shares
Antwoine McCoy, co-founder of The Miami Takeover.
As the world shifts back to gathering and celebratory events post-pandemic, the
Miami Takeover stands as a beacon of resilience, vibrancy, and cultural pride. This festival not only marks a significant milestone for go-go music but also celebrates the innovation and artistry present within the Black community.
