Lactips and SmartSolve Forge Global Alliance for Plastic-Free Packaging Solutions
Innovating for a Sustainable Future
In a significant move towards sustainability, Lactips, the French innovator known for its 100% biobased, water-soluble natural polymers, has formed a global strategic alliance with SmartSolve, a leading US-based company pioneer in biobased, water-soluble packaging solutions. This partnership was officially announced on September 18, 2026, and aims to expedite the removal of plastic packaging from the global market.
The collaboration began in 2024, culminating in the launch of PureNil™, heralded as the world's first completely plastic-free, biodegradable, printable, and flexible packaging material. In under two years, this revolutionary product has gone from concept to mass production. PureNil™ is fully approved for direct food contact and dissolves quickly in water, leaving no microplastic residues—making it an excellent choice for diverse industries, including cosmetics, personal care, food, and beverages.
Jonathan Jakubowski, CEO and co-founder of SmartSolve, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "Lactips has provided us with the only truly plastic-free, water-soluble material that has proven itself on a commercial scale. What started as a research and development collaboration has evolved into a long-term strategic partnership, and PureNil™ demonstrates that plastic-free packaging is not merely a promise for the future; it is already a reality."
Alexis von Tschammer, CEO of Lactips, remarked on the importance of this collaboration, stating, "Signing this exclusive agreement with SmartSolve marks a significant milestone in Lactips' global expansion. We are excited about this partnership and want to thank the SmartSolve team for their trust and commitment to advancing waste-free, natural packaging solutions. Together, we have the opportunity to positively impact both industry practices and the environment."
Background on Lactips and SmartSolve
Founded in 2014 based on the research of Dr. Frédéric Prochazka, Research Professor at the Université de Saint-Étienne, Lactips specializes in the development and production of natural polymers that are 100% biobased and entirely biodegradable in all environments. In 2022, the company transitioned towards industrialization by opening its first production facility, employing around 40 staff members today.
SmartSolve, established in 2016 by Al Caperna and Jonathan Jakubowski, boasts a state-of-the-art 55,000 square foot facility in Bowling Green, Ohio. The company has quickly risen to become one of the global leaders in patented, biobased, water-soluble flexible packaging, focusing on innovative solutions that minimize the environmental impact of packaging waste.
Looking Ahead
The roadmap for this partnership extends beyond the initial offering of PureNil™ 0. It aims to explore future generations of biobased, plastic-free packaging, thereby further contributing to a sustainable packaging landscape. With a shared vision for a greener future, both Lactips and SmartSolve are poised to drive industry changes that align with growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly packaging solutions.
This collaboration not only represents a significant advancement in packaging technology but also reflects a broader shift in the industry towards sustainability and environmental responsibility. As they continue to innovate, Lactips and SmartSolve will play a crucial role in shaping a world where packaging is no longer a source of pollution, but a part of a circular economy that enhances both products and our planet.
