Public Allies Launches New Fund to Empower Community Leaders Amid Funding Cuts

Public Allies Launches Leadership in Action Fund

In an effort to combat the adverse effects of recent federal funding cuts, Public Allies, a national nonprofit organization, has announced the inception of its Leadership in Action Fund. The initiative aims to raise $1 million within the next six months to bolster support for its community of diverse young leaders and maintain essential programs affected by the cuts to AmeriCorps programs.

"Nonprofit organizations across the country are facing uncertainty," stated Jenise Terrell, CEO of Public Allies. She called upon individuals and philanthropic organizations to assist in filling the gap left by the deliberate dismantling of the national social safety net. According to Terrell, Public Allies is prepared to mobilize innovative, community-rooted leaders when governmental support is lacking.

Since its establishment in 1992, Public Allies has partnered with over 3,000 local nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies, equipping more than 10,000 young leaders with the skills necessary to launch impactful programs addressing critical issues such as education, homelessness, hunger, violence prevention, and underemployment.

Public Allies’ extensive network of committed leaders and nearly three decades of experience in fostering collaboration among diverse leaders is key as they respond to the current situation. Their goal is to bring together everyday heroes across the nation to build support networks for communities facing the brunt of these funding cuts.

Strong communities, as described by Wisconsin State Rep Darrin Madison, form the backbone of American democracy. He said, “Every time we invest in a young leader or empower a local organization, we reinforce the very fabric of American democracy—enhancing public safety, innovation, and quality of life.”

Madison continued, “Public Allies served as a springboard in my life and in the lives of many community leaders in Milwaukee. If we don’t act swiftly, the repercussions of these funding cuts will impact generations to come.”

The Leadership in Action Fund represents a critical response not only to the immediate needs of these organizations but also to the broader necessity for systemic support in building a just and equitable society.

Public Allies, as a 501c3 nonprofit, remains steadfast in its mission to foster underrepresented leadership and enhance community engagement. By ensuring that those most affected by the cuts have the tools they need to thrive, they are taking a crucial step toward sustaining impactful leadership roles in communities across the nation.

The public is encouraged to engage with the fund and help support the vital work that Public Allies does across various communities. Media contact for inquiries is Nina Koh at Public Allies, whose efforts continue to inspire and mobilize action towards an inclusive future.
