Transforming Youth Understanding of Social Security through Interactive Learning Games

Understanding Social Security through Engaging Games

On July 26, 2026, the NPO Social Change Agency will hold a significant event in Taito, Tokyo, showcasing the outcomes of its experiential educational program called the "Social Security Game". This program is aimed at high school and middle school students, evolving their understanding of social rights and the social security system. The upcoming report meeting promises to display real-life examples from schools across the nation and to present findings from a significant effectiveness study conducted throughout the 2025 academic year.

What is the Social Security Game?

The Social Security Game is an innovative, interactive educational tool developed to help young people understand how to access social security systems when they face challenges in their lives. Instead of merely memorizing names of the programs, players utilize character cards and situation cards to brainstorm which welfare services are available to help them or those around them during difficult times. This game encourages participants to think critically about their choices and the resources at their disposal, fostering an environment where social rights are perceived as accessible and understandable.

Addressing Knowledge Barriers

Unfortunately, many individuals in need do not access existing social security systems due to a lack of awareness or unclear information. Social Change Agency aims to remove these barriers by ensuring that children understand social security as something that pertains to them directly. This educational initiative empowers students to actively exercise their rights when necessary. The report meeting will delve into the observable changes in students’ understanding and attitudes towards social security before and after participating in the game, supported by quantitative data and feedback from educators.

Event Highlights

1. Findings from Nationwide Implementation

Participants will learn how the Social Security Game was integrated and applied in various schools across Japan, with insights gained from actual practice reports.

2. Results from Effectiveness Studies

The session will reveal how students’ perception of social security changed following their involvement in the program, drawing on feedback from surveys conducted before and after the game sessions, as well as from recent web polls and group interviews.

3. Live Game Experience

Attendees will get a hands-on opportunity to engage with the game, experiencing firsthand the educational value it offers. This session will include participation using actual game cards to simulate discussions around social security.

4. Future Prospects and Q&A

The final part of the meeting will involve a discussion about the future of the Social Security Game, where participants are invited to ask questions and give feedback. Following the formal session, there will be an open networking time for all attendees to engage.
