doda's New Work-Life Balance Concept
In the recent survey conducted by doda, a transitioning service by Persol Career, with responses from 1,962 working adults aged between 20 and 60, vital insights were gained surrounding the concepts of work-life balance and life satisfaction.
A Timing for Reflection
As society moves forward with work reforms aimed at rectifying excessive working hours, the occurrence of the so-called 'May blues' highlights a time when individuals often find themselves grappling with their work-life dynamics. In May, after long holidays, many face fatigue and a disconnection from their ideal lifestyles, prompting a period of self-reflection regarding their work and personal lives.
Key Survey Findings
The survey indicates a disconnect between the aspiration for a balanced lifestyle and the reality faced by many. While a significant number of respondents (over 50%) acknowledge an increase in work-life balance, only about 20% reported feeling an increase in free time. Alarmingly, among those who claimed to experience increased leisure, more than 30% reported no change or even a decrease in their overall happiness.
On a positive note, around 60% of participants expressed a desire to dedicate more time to their personal interests. However, when asked about their current activities to enhance daily fulfillment, over 40% indicated prioritizing sufficient rest and sleep, underlining a trend where respondents seek passive rest instead of active engagement in their passions.
Factors Hindering Balance
The survey also examined barriers that prevent achieving an ideal balance between obligations and passions. The prominent hindrances include insufficient financial resources and mental or physical fatigue, which resonate with many participants' experiences. Notably, 55% of respondents revealed they curtail their leisure activities due to worries about upcoming work or chores.
Through doda's unique categorization approach, one-third identified themselves as 'Stalled Actore,' where they separate work from personal life but still feel a lack of fulfillment. Participants yearned for a shift away from obligations, expressing a desire to engage in their interests more freely.
Introducing Work Balance
In response to these findings, doda is introducing the novel concept of 'Work
Balance'—the notion to harmonize the sense of duty (Work) with personal interests (Like), creating a more integrated approach to work and life. The dual focus aims to empower individuals to define their work-life rhythm and align responsibilities with passions, transcending traditional views of work-life balance.
Available Resources
To help individuals navigate their aspirations, doda is launching two key initiatives:
1. Work Balance Diagnosis – A free diagnostic tool that allows users to assess their current state by answering straightforward questions regarding their work and daily life. Depending on the answers, individuals will receive tailored advice to achieve their ideal balance.
2. Note Contest: #Work Balance – In partnership with the platform Note, doda will host a contest that encourages participants to share stories that exemplify their pursuit of an ideal balance between their obligations and personal interests. This initiative invites varied perspectives and opportunities for participants to reflect on their experience.
Regarding the new concept, 64% of surveyed individuals expressed agreement with the idea of Work Balance, with over 70% of respondents in their twenties showing support.
Conclusion: The Way Forward
As the landscape of work continues to evolve, addressing the issues identified by the survey becomes increasingly vital. While reducing work hours is a commendable feat, it does not automatically equate to satisfaction or fulfillment. The pressing challenge lies in the individual’s approach to conceptualizing their work and personal life, where the balance of obligations versus passions plays a critical role.
With the advent of Work Balance, doda aims to shift perspectives and provide clarity in aligning daily responsibilities with one’s true interests, enhancing overall well-being in the workplace and beyond.
