Agra Energy Reaches Technology Milestone
Agra Energy, a pioneer in renewable fuel technology, has made significant strides by successfully demonstrating the production of renewable fuels at their new facility located in New Franken, Wisconsin. This achievement is marked by the production of Fischer Tropsch Liquid Fuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and renewable naphtha derived from biogas sourced from dairy farms.
At the heart of this demonstration lies an innovative collaboration between Agra Energy and HYCO1, which provides the patented CUBE™ reforming technology for syngas production. This process effectively utilizes biogas, evolving from a traditional waste stream management approach to a solution that extracts value from carbon dioxide (CO₂). The use of HYCO1's CORE™ Catalyst allows for the conversion of CO₂ and renewable natural gas (RNG) into syngas, facilitating the production of high-quality fuels.
A Transformative Approach to Fuel Production
Unlike conventional methods that simply vent CO₂, the CORE™ Catalyst transforms this greenhouse gas into a resource, significantly enhancing fuel yield by more than 20%. This process makes Agra Energy's system one of the most efficient in the industry, capable of generating targeted syngas ratios and minimizing additional energy consumption throughout fuel production.
Brad Yacullo, the Chief Operating Officer of Agra Energy, expressed the importance of this milestone, stating, “This demonstration is the moment our technology moves from promising to proven. We are turning a dairy farm's biogas, including the CO₂ that others throw away, into SAF and renewable naphtha at industry-leading yield.” This statement underscores the validity and commercial potential of Agra Energy’s innovation.
Having confirmed its technology at Technology Readiness Level 9 (TRL 9) – the highest standard for technological maturity – Agra Energy is now poised to expand its operations. The successful demonstration opens new avenues for licensing their technology to other facilities and for establishing additional Agra Energy plants across the country.
Commercialization and Future Opportunities
Looking forward, both Agra Energy and HYCO1 are focusing on two major objectives: licensing their groundbreaking process to various industry stakeholders and developing additional proprietary plants that will each target a production capacity of 150 to 250 barrels per day (BPD). These plans are aligned with Agra Energy’s ambitious goal of achieving a total of 1,000 BPD of biogas-derived fuel production by the year 2027.
These modular plants are strategically designed to be located near agricultural hubs and other biogas sources, enabling a seamless transition of waste streams into liquid fuel, which can be readily utilized in the market. In pursuing these initiatives, Agra Energy is actively seeking partnerships with project developers, offtake partners for SAF and renewable naphtha, and financial collaborators to accelerate the implementation of their leading technology.
