Nuclear Company Unveils Prosperity One: Major Nuclear Complex in Kentucky
The Nuclear Company has recently announced the Prosperity One project, conceptualizing a groundbreaking nuclear complex in Lewis County, Kentucky. This project is exceptional with the capability to house up to six Westinghouse AP1000 reactors, making it the largest nuclear facility in the country upon its anticipated completion.
With an output capacity of approximately 6.6 gigawatts, Prosperity One aims to sit along the Ohio River, presenting a significant leap toward enhancing America's energy production. This initiative responds directly to President Trump's call for accelerated energy generation in the United States, marking a substantial step towards revamping the country's nuclear energy capabilities on a grand scale. The project is expected to foster a new wave of industrial investment, generate skilled jobs, and create long-term economic opportunities in a region that has been pivotal to the energy supply chain for over a century.
Joe Klecha, the Nuclear Company’s Director of Nuclear Energy, stressed the importance of community involvement in large infrastructure projects. With over 33 years of experience in the nuclear sector, including leadership roles in the United States Navy and major nuclear power plants, Klecha is committed to ensuring that the project benefits the local area while ensuring a steady energy supply for Kentucky. The Nuclear Company plans to collaborate closely with local landowners and engage with the community to facilitate the project effectively.
Community member Sam Howard, a lifelong resident and landowner in Lewis County, echoed the sentiments surrounding the project. He spoke passionately about its potential to create job opportunities for future generations and expressed his hope that his grandchildren would have the chance to thrive in their hometown.
By July 2026, Lewis County officials began efforts to have their area designated as prepared for nuclear energy by the Kentucky Nuclear Energy Development Office. In a recent move, the county leaders organized public meetings to gather community feedback which led to an overwhelming majority vote to submit the request to the state.
As the project progresses, preliminary activities will include detailed site characterization, geotechnical surveys, environmental impact assessments, and network connection planning -- all essential steps before beginning construction, which is anticipated to start in 2028.
To move forward with construction, the Nuclear Company is set to establish engineering, environmental, regulatory, and commercial groundwork. The entire process embodies a commitment to integrating community needs and environmental considerations into the development of a facility of this magnitude. The company will seek necessary permits from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) under established licensing processes to ensure all regulatory requirements are met.
The Nuclear Company positions itself as a leading platform for nuclear infrastructure, advocating for the unified deployment of nuclear technology, expansion of new nuclear facilities, and operational safety improvements. By marrying innovative technological advancements with a comprehensive operational model, the company aims to address the full lifecycle of nuclear technology deployment seamlessly. This progressive initiative is poised to not only revolutionize the energy landscape in Kentucky but also set a precedent for nuclear development nationwide, showcasing the vital role of local community engagement in shaping future energy solutions.
