NEST EdLAB and aeru Present a Unique Educational Experience
In a remarkable effort to ignite the curiosity and exploration spirit of young minds, NEST EdLAB, based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is set to collaborate with aeru to deliver an innovative online workshop titled "Indigo Dyeing Science Class" on August 9, 2025. The initiative aims to merge the realms of traditional craftsmanship with scientific exploration, particularly focusing on the exquisite art of indigo dyeing.
With the ever-evolving interests of children today, it has become essential to cultivate learning experiences that resonate with their passions and encourage active participation. Understanding this need, NEST EdLAB regularly offers unique educational programs that intersect tradition and science, empowering children to trust their curiosity and engage in profound inquiry.
A Dive into Japan’s Traditional Indigo Dyeing
This summer class is not just any ordinary workshop; it uniquely integrates science and craftsmanship. Participants will receive the freshest indigo leaves from the prestigious Hon-Aizome Yano factory in Tokushima, delivered directly to their homes via cool宅急便. They will then engage in interactive lessons via Zoom, where they will explore two distinct dyeing techniques: the "fresh leaf dye" and the "beating dye" methods.
Alongside these hands-on activities, the workshop also delves into the exciting world of plant pigments and explores the science behind silk structures, allowing students to experience the convergence of nature, craftsmanship, and science through their senses. This unique approach ensures that learning goes beyond rote memorization, nurturing essential non-cognitive skills such as observational, emotional, and expressive capabilities that are increasingly vital in today's world.
Aimed at Young Explorers
The event is tailored for elementary and middle school students, with a limited capacity of only ten participants on a first-come, first-served basis. The fee for the workshop is 6,000 yen plus 13,700 yen for instructional materials, which include indigo leaves, dyeing silk and cotton handkerchiefs, cocoons, a text guide, and shipping fees.
The workshop will be conducted by Daisuke Fujita from NEST LAB. and Erika Mori, an instructor from aeru school. Their combined experience and enthusiasm will provide participants with an enriching educational experience that encourages creativity and discovery.
