Ritz Theatre Board Launches National Search for New Executive Director

Ritz Theatre's National Executive Director Search

The Ritz Theatre's Board of Directors is embarking on a nation-wide search for a new executive director, as they strive to further the revitalization and preservation of this iconic venue located in Corpus Christi, Texas. Amidst its visionary goals, the board has appointed Jillian Becquet as the interim executive director during the impending transition.

A Strong Candidate

Jillian Becquet brings with her a wealth of experience in fundraising, alongside a significant history with the Ritz itself and the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History where she has excelled in various leadership roles. She previously served as interim executive director at the museum and has been pivotal in many projects aimed at historic preservation in the region. As a valued Commissioner and former Chair of the Corpus Christi Landmark Commission, her profound understanding of historical structures positions her as an ideal candidate to lead the Ritz Theatre.

The Ritz Theatre's Legacy

Opened in 1929, the Ritz Theatre stands as one of the last remaining historic venues in Corpus Christi, capturing the spirit of the roaring twenties amidst countless urban developments. Recently, the theatre was awarded a generous $30 million grant from the Texas Legislature, aimed at facilitating its restoration. This grant achievement owes much to the relentless advocacy of Representative Todd Hunter and Senator Chuy Hinojosa, a fact acknowledged by the board.

Board President Rick Hatch expressed gratitude, stating, "We are thrilled to have Jillian on board to help guide us through this exciting chapter. Her dedication to our fundraising objectives and her passion for preserving the Ritz's cultural heritage make her a natural fit for our team."

Milestones in Restoration

Since the term of former executive director Cheryl Voltzmeyer-Rios, the Ritz Theatre has celebrated multiple milestones, including its recent placement on the National Register of Historic Places. The Board has worked closely with OTJ Architects to oversee the preservation efforts. Additionally, a study conducted by the Palmer Westport Group has affirmed the local capacity to rehabilitate the majestic hall. During these years, the Ritz has emerged as a cultural epicenter, garnering the support and attention of arts patrons across Texas.

The Future Vision

With the help of the recruitment firm Lee + Associates, the board aims to finalize the appointment of a permanent executive director by October 1, 2025. This strategic move will be instrumental in propelling the theatre’s mission to restore its original design while also introducing state-of-the-art performance facilities and fine arts educational programs.

The renovation plans include not only revitalizing the historical structure but also constructing a new facility adjacent to the theatre, which will cater to performances and educational opportunities for aspiring artists, students, and audiences alike across the Lone Star state.

In conclusion, the Ritz Theatre’s journey represents a commitment to cultural enrichment and historical preservation. As the board searches for a new executive leader, they remain steadfast in their mission to enable the Ritz Theatre to reclaim its status as a vibrant center for community arts and excellence. Ultimately, this endeavor will serve to honor the theatre's storied past while positioning it for a luminous future.
