Academy Sports + Outdoors Collaborates to Equip Students for School Success

Supporting Local Students: Academy’s Back-to-School Initiative

As the summer winds down, many families in Houston are preparing for the upcoming school year. In a commendable effort to ease the financial burden of back-to-school shopping, Academy Sports + Outdoors has joined forces with French Toast and BEARE, a non-profit organization, to support 1,000 local students. This initiative not only provides necessary school uniforms but also aims to empower young learners with essentials that enhance their confidence and readiness for both academic and sporting activities.

On July 28, 2026, Academy's corporate headquarters in Katy, Texas, transformed into a bustling back-to-school shopping paradise. Hundreds of passionate Academy team members collaborated with nearly 500 elementary and middle school students from BEAR, helping them select uniforms, socks, and sports equipment that matched their school’s dress code and their personal tastes.

Meredith Klein, Academy's Vice President of Communications, emphasized the company's commitment to relieving the stress of back-to-school shopping for families. “We understand the challenges that come with preparing for a new school year, particularly for families facing financial difficulties. By collaborating with organizations like BEAR and French Toast, we’re striving to make a positive difference in our community,” Klein stated during the event.

A Meaningful Partnership

The collaboration with French Toast has allowed Academy to provide over $50,000 worth of school essentials, ensuring that each student walks away with items that will help them shine academically. French Toast’s Division President, Stephen Ashear, shared how their mission aligns with this initiative: “We believe that every child deserves to feel comfortable and confident as they pursue their education. By offering quality schoolwear, we aim to inspire and empower kids throughout the year.”

The shopping event is just one facet of Academy’s extensive community engagement efforts. The initiative marks the company's second annual back-to-school volunteer event, having partnered with Operation Homefront the previous year to pack 1,500 backpacks for military children.

Helping Those in Need

BEAR (BE A Resource) plays a pivotal role in supporting children facing adversity, from abuse to neglect, throughout the Greater Houston area. Executive Director Tammy Hetmaniak expressed gratitude for the partnerships that make their mission possible: “Thanks to Academy Sports + Outdoors and other generous donors, we are able to provide critical resources and school supplies to over 17,000 children annually. Every child should feel safe and supported during their educational journey.”

Conclusion

Both Academy Sports + Outdoors and French Toast are dedicated to leaving a lasting impact in their community, ensuring no child is left behind as they embark on a new academic year. This initiative not only highlights the importance of community involvement but also showcases how corporations can effectively contribute to the well-being of future generations. By providing uniforms and essentials, Academy is investing in the success of Houston’s youth and setting a precedent for community partnership.
