StrongAfter.org Expands Resources for Men's Mental Health Awareness Month
In June, StrongAfter.org takes significant strides to raise awareness during Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, a crucial initiative that aims to support male survivors of sexual abuse and assault. Through expanded outreach and resources tailored specifically for men, the organization works to destigmatize the conversation surrounding male mental health and sexual violence, which often remains under-discussed.
StrongAfter.org is a nonprofit dedicated to helping male survivors find the resources they need to navigate their healing journeys. Recognizing that at least one in six men have faced unwanted or abusive sexual experiences, StrongAfter aims to fill a crucial gap in available support systems that often overlook men due to societal stigma. Many survivors feel isolated, ashamed, or fear that they won't be believed, which can deter them from seeking help and support. By addressing these barriers head-on, StrongAfter seeks not just to provide resources but to foster a community of understanding and empathy for male survivors.
Austin O'Brion, the Co-Founder and Head of Product at StrongAfter, emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and accessible platform for survivors. He states, "Survivors often hesitate to seek help because existing systems feel overwhelming, exposed, or impersonal. Our goal was to create an environment where they can feel safe from the first moment, with easy access to trusted information rather than lengthy discussions."
Central to StrongAfter's offerings is OSWALT™, a proprietary AI-powered tool that has been designed specifically for trauma-informed support. Unlike traditional chatbots, OSWALT™ focuses solely on delivering reliable and accurate information derived from expert-approved resources. This singular focus ensures that survivors receive immediate assistance while also guaranteeing confidentiality and emotional safety. The architecture of OSWALT™, developed by Carter Blum—a former AI engineer at Google DeepMind—places a premium on privacy, which allows survivors to seek help without fear of their situation being shared or scrutinized.
The demographic that StrongAfter particularly aims to support includes transition-age youth (18–24 years), military service members and veterans, BIPOC communities, and men currently or formerly incarcerated. By offering tailored materials and outreach, StrongAfter seeks to engage populations that are often overlooked by traditional support systems.
The significance of men's mental health awareness cannot be understated. StrongAfter's efforts this month coincide with broader national discussions aiming to promote education and advocacy for mental health issues affecting men. Sexual violence and its repercussions transcend gender and background, and StrongAfter is making it their mission to broaden public understanding of this critical issue.
Backed by seed funding from the National Football League (NFL), StrongAfter is positioned to innovate the way survivor support is delivered. Anna Isaacson, Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility for the NFL, shares support for this initiative: "StrongAfter combines innovation, compassion, and practicality, reaching survivors who may otherwise not seek help. We support efforts that bring greater awareness and accessibility to those in need."
Men's Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against stigma and the need for continued efforts to support male survivors of sexual violence. StrongAfter.org strives to create a safe space for survivors by providing resources, education, and connection to external support services, ensuring that every survivor is seen, heard, and supported in their unique journey toward recovery and well-being.
