LeWiz Communications Secures NASA Contract for Spaceflight Avionics Networking

LeWiz Communications, Inc., headquartered in San Jose, California, has recently achieved a significant milestone by receiving a NASA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase III contract. This contract will propel the company's focus on the development of advanced avionics networking systems, intended to bolster communications and interoperability among electronic systems on spacecraft during exploration missions.

The collaboration between LeWiz and NASA is not a surprise, as the two parties have been working closely together for years. The focus of this new endeavor is to refine and enhance Ethernet networking technologies specifically designed for the rigorous demands of aerospace applications. Each exploration mission undertaken by NASA requires near-flawless communication reliability, and as such, LeWiz’s technologies will play a vital role in ensuring the success of future missions beyond Earth.

Addressing Critical Challenges

Traditional Ethernet technology has become a staple for commercial and industrial networking; however, its conventional format often falls short when applied to space systems. The nature of aerospace communications requires deterministic timing, high reliability, and the capability to support performance-critical operations. Addressing these needs has led industry standards groups, including SAE International and IEEE, to take action by developing two pivotal technologies:

1. Time-Triggered Ethernet (TTE) - This technology employs a predictable and deterministic communication model that is critical for mission-dependent systems. It was already deployed on NASA's Orion spacecraft as part of the Artemis program, showcasing its relevance in high-stakes environments.

2. Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) - Building on Ethernet, TSN enhances the ability to handle time-sensitive operations, allowing for improved interoperability and network management—a must-have in complex spacecraft architectures.

As spacecraft systems evolve, the necessity to integrate systems that operate under differing networking standards becomes paramount. Therefore, establishing a bridge between TTE and TSN is essential.

Bridging TTE and TSN

Under this new contract, LeWiz will pioneer the creation of a TTE-to-TSN Bridge System. This innovative system will facilitate communication between devices using these two technologies, thus supporting existing and future avionics subsystems. The aim is to assist NASA in adopting new capabilities while maintaining functionality for already established systems.

The comprehensive hardware system developed by LeWiz will include a chassis compliant with the SOSA Space Appendix, alongside networking boards and critical firmware/software. This initiative will diligently adhere to the environmental and reliability standards that are a prerequisite in the aerospace industry. Such advancements are vital for operations on various platforms, including spacecraft, space stations, and potential exploratory missions to the Moon and Mars. In these environments, robust and reliable communications are crucial for mission success.

Building on Past Collaborations

This Phase III award is a significant leap towards transforming technologies previously explored in earlier Phase I and Phase II SBIR projects into practical, operational aerospace systems. LeWiz Communications has amassed substantial expertise in the domain of deterministic Ethernet networking due to its past collaboration with NASA and the U.S. Navy. Such a wealth of experience positions the company well to develop integrated networking solutions that meet evolving challenges in aerospace exploration.

Chinh Le, CEO of LeWiz Communications, expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by NASA, stating, “We are honored and excited to receive this NASA Phase III award. This reflects years of dedicated research and development that we have committed to in advanced avionics networking.” The company views this endeavor not just as a contract but as a crucial step towards supporting future human space exploration missions, embodying their long-term vision.

Looking Ahead

As the aerospace industry looks to the stars with ambitious projects planned for the coming decades, the role of advanced technology in mission success cannot be overstated. LeWiz Communications' new initiatives under the NASA contract are set to redefine avionics networking, enhancing both existing capabilities and future possibilities in the cosmos.

With advancements occurring in a collaborative setting, and significant groundwork laid in previous research, the aerospace sector can expect that future missions will benefit from heightened reliability and innovative communication strategies. As discussions continue at the upcoming Radiation Hardened Electronic Technology conference in San Diego on November 3-5, industry professionals eagerly anticipate further developments from LeWiz Communications.
