In an exciting development for sustainable transportation, Kumamoto Prefecture is all set to roll out Japan's inaugural large electric bus service. The
Hino Blue Ribbon Z EV, produced by Hino Motors, will commence operations as an airport limousine bus linking Kumamoto Airport to the city center starting March 2026. This initiative represents a significant step toward achieving a carbon-neutral society and enhancing local disaster preparedness in the region.
The project is a collaborative effort involving Kyushu Sangyo Bus Co., Kumamoto Hino Motors, Kyushu Electric Power, and Fuyo Total Lease, specifically through their subsidiary, Fuyo Auto Lease. The introduction of two electric buses marks the first instance of a large EV bus service being launched in Kumamoto and signifies Hino Motors' first domestic delivery of an electric bus.
This ambitious plan aligns with the
Kyuden Electric Bus Service, a monthly subscription service introduced by Kyushu Electric Power and Fuyo Auto Lease, aimed at supporting municipalities and private firms interested in adopting electric vehicles (EVs). This service includes comprehensive support from vehicle introduction to operation, thus ensuring a seamless transition to cleaner transport options.
The
Hino Blue Ribbon Z EV is designed with user accessibility in mind, boasting a capacity of 65 passengers, including 23 seats, and a completely flat floor sans steps. This design is particularly beneficial for children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, assuring a safe and comfortable travel experience for all.
Charging Infrastructure
To keep the electric buses operational, a robust charging infrastructure will be implemented. Kyushu Electric Power, alongside Kyuden Techno Systems and Fuyo Auto Lease, will collaborate to provide consistent support from the introduction to the operation of the EV buses. A rapid charger capable of charging both buses simultaneously, with a maximum output of 120 kW, will be installed at the Kyushu Sangyo Bus depot. This setup will also include a communications control device to visualize charging status and power usage data.
Moreover, through an intelligent charging management system, optimal charging plans and output controls are developed in accordance with operational schedules. This approach not only minimizes unnecessary charging but also contributes to extending battery life.
Contribution to Disaster Preparedness
In addition to its environmental benefits, the electric bus service is designed to bolster disaster response capabilities. In the event of a disaster or power outage, these electric buses can serve as emergency power sources, supplying electricity to evacuation centers and local facilities. By integrating multifunctional EVs into public transport, this initiative aims to accelerate the overall shift towards electric mobility in Kumamoto and strengthens the region's disaster response infrastructure, setting a benchmark for future transportation systems.
This venture not only signifies a commitment to sustainable transport but also underscores the cooperative spirit of local businesses and organizations working together for a greener, more resilient future. With its innovative approach and comprehensive infrastructure, Kumamoto is paving the way for a more eco-conscious transportation landscape that prioritizes community needs and environmental responsibility.
In conclusion, the introduction of the
Hino Blue Ribbon Z EV marks a pivotal moment for Kumamoto Prefecture, illustrating how integrated efforts in technology and community planning can lead to effective solutions for a sustainable future. Residents can look forward to enjoying a more comfortable, environmentally-friendly means of transportation, reinforcing the importance of building sustainable transport infrastructure in Japan.
