BurCell Technologies Collaborates with EarnDLT to Tokenize Environmental Attributes in Alternative Fuels
BurCell Technologies and EarnDLT Partnership Overview
In a groundbreaking collaboration, BurCell® Technologies, Inc., recognized for its cutting-edge waste-to-energy solutions, has teamed up with EarnDLT, Inc. This strategic partnership is set to revolutionize the tracking of environmental attributes associated with alternative solid fuels and renewable natural gas (RNG) generated at BurCell’s facilities.
What This Collaboration Entails
The two companies are launching an initiative to digitize and authenticate environmental attribute certificates through a blockchain-based system. Utilizing EarnDLT's Greentruth platform, BurCell will issue Quantified Emissions Tokens (QETs), which will act as mechanisms to reduce compliance burdens for natural gas, coal, and other energy sectors.
Significance of Quantified Emissions Tokens
Each QET corresponds to one MMBtu of thermal energy and includes verified carbon intensity metrics expressed in kilograms of CO2 equivalents per MMBtu, calculated according to the stringent GREET model. By issuing these tokens, BurCell seeks to enhance transparency regarding environmental benefits derived from its waste diversion initiatives. CEO Ron Barmore states, “This partnership enables us to provide our customers with transparent, blockchain-verified environmental benefits.”
The BurCell System: Transforming Waste into Resources
Central to BurCell's mission is its proprietary BurCell System, designed to convert municipal solid waste into renewable feedstock. Operating in Cordele, Georgia, this technology effectively diverts up to 75% of processed waste, while eliminating more than 90% of the organic matter that generates methane in landfills. With another facility planned for South Fulton, Georgia, the company is poised to broaden its impact in the waste-to-energy domain.
A Pathway to Carbon Negative Production
The processes utilized by BurCell result in the generation of alternative solid fuels and renewable natural gas with remarkable carbon intensity figures ranging from -65 to -110 kgCO2e/MMBtu. This illustrates BurCell's commitment to achieving net-negative emissions through its innovative waste diversion methods.
Benefits and Compliance Alignment
EarnDLT’s Greentruth platform ensures that the certificates issued through this collaboration feature immutable record-keeping enabled by blockchain technology. This guarantees that the environmental benefits provided are not only transparent but also prevents issues like double-counting. Moreover, the methodologies employed conform to ISO standards and integrate seamlessly with California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard, offering producers access to premium markets for low-carbon fuels.
Future Expansion and Projections
The phased rollout of this partnership will see Environmental Attribute Certificates for alternative solid fuels available by early 2026, with a significant annual volume of over 400,000 MMBtu projected for 2027. By 2028, the total issuance of certificates is expected to exceed 1,000,000 MMBtu as BurCell continues pushing forward with its pioneering efforts in the waste-to-energy sector.
Closing Thoughts
The partnership between BurCell Technologies and EarnDLT exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to environmental sustainability. By leveraging blockchain’s capabilities, the two companies aim to create a clear, verified path for reducing carbon footprints and achieving compliance in an ever-evolving energy landscape. As industries around the globe seek to meet stringent emissions targets, the innovative solutions presented by BurCell and EarnDLT may serve as a benchmark for future endeavors in sustainable energy.
