Okayama University Hosts Summer Course on Semiconductors and Society for Students

Exploring the Science of Semiconductors: A Unique Course at Okayama University

Okayama University, located in Okayama City, Japan, is enhancing its educational offerings with an intriguing summer course titled "The Science of the Ordinary - Semiconductors Reflected in Smartphones and Society." Scheduled from September 17 to 19, 2025, this course aims to engage students in a multifaceted examination of semiconductors through the lens of smartphones.

Enhancing Perspectives and Industry Collaboration

This is the second edition of the course, which saw participation from 15 first to third-year students across various departments, including engineering, law, and the Global Discovery Program (GDP). The course is designed not only to deepen students' understanding of semiconductors but also to cultivate scientific reasoning and logical thinking skills.

Students engaged in hands-on learning through workshops and factory visits, which provided real-world insights into the semiconductor industry. On the first day, they dissected smartphones under the guidance of special guest lecturer Yasushi Nagashima from Advantest Corporation. This unique opportunity allowed students to touch and explore components they would typically never encounter, leading to profound realizations about the intricate technologies embedded within smartphones that encompass chemical, mechanical, and information sciences.

Insights Gained Through Hands-On Experience

The second day featured a visit to the cleanroom of Sharp Fukuyama Laser Corporation, a semiconductor manufacturing facility. Students participated in a workshop aimed at identifying challenges and proposing solutions, culminating in presentations delivered on the final day. Feedback from students indicated a significant transformation in their understanding of semiconductors. One remarked, "What I previously viewed as a vague concept now feels directly connected to our daily lives," while another noted the clarity gained from practical experiences beyond classroom settings.

Students also expressed gratitude for the chance to interact with various year groups and industry professionals, which enriched their learning experience. One student remarked, "Listening to everyone’s presentations revealed ideas I had never considered!" The support from their peers and guest presenters further boosted their confidence in speaking publicly.

Positive Reception from Industry Partners

Sharp Fukuyama Laser Corporation expressed admiration for the innovative ideas presented by the students. Comments included appreciation for suggestions like incorporating GPS technology into their presentations, showcasing the creative thought processes that emerged during workshops. The industry representatives were evidently moved by the students' presentations, which demonstrated not only deep empathy but a genuine understanding of the challenges faced by professionals in the field.

This course exemplifies a successful blending of theoretical knowledge and practical application, aligning with the goals of the Chugoku Economic Industrial Bureau, which provided support through its regional semiconductor industry promotion council. The initiative highlights Okayama University’s commitment to nurturing talent capable of addressing societal issues by fostering stronger ties with regional communities and industries.

Looking Ahead

As it continues to strengthen collaborations with society and industry, Okayama University is poised to play a pivotal role in training future leaders who are equipped to tackle pressing societal challenges. The university urges the public and interested stakeholders to remain engaged with its innovative endeavors and educational programs. By pioneering initiatives like this, Okayama University reaffirms its position as a distinctive research institution, dedicated to the growth of both individuals and communities in pursuit of sustainable development.
