Ocean Preservation and Innovation: Refineverse's Fishing Net Recycling Project

On July 5, 2025, Refineverse Group, based in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, executed the third installment of its fishing net recovery and recycling initiative at Shimoda Aquarium in Shizuoka Prefecture. This commendable event saw the participation of 31 individuals, who helped collect and sort a total of 190 kg of used fishing nets that were previously employed in Kinmedai and tuna fishing. This quantity marked a record high for the event's history at this location.

The recovered fishing nets underwent a meticulous process at Refineverse's facility, where contaminants like metal were removed to recycle them into high-quality nylon pellets known as "REAMIDE®." These pellets are then utilized in a broad range of products, including apparel and furniture.

Event Highlights

The issue of marine plastic waste has garnered global attention, and the disposal of discarded fishing nets in the ocean is a pressing challenge. Five years ago, Refineverse commercialized the recycling of these nets, transforming them into REAMIDE® nylon pellets. To successfully recycle fishing nets, it is imperative to detach metallic elements such as hooks and lines.

This project specifically aimed to recycle fishing nets previously used in Kinmedai fishing in the Izu Shimoda area. The event attracted many attendees who were excited about participating in this hands-on experience of sorting and handling the nets. Feedback from participants included enthusiastic remarks like, "It was fascinating to handle the nets, as I rarely get such opportunities," and "I learned about this event through a newspaper announcement and was keen to join." Some participants dedicated significant time to the sorting process, showcasing their commitment to environmental sustainability.

This time, participants successfully processed a total of 98.4 kg of nets, contributing to an overall collection of 190 kg when combined with the efforts of partnering companies. As a token of appreciation, contributors received various rewards based on the weight of the nets they processed. These included discounted tickets to Shimoda Aquarium, vouchers for otter feeding experiences, and novelty items crafted from recycled fishing nets, making the event both entertaining and educational in its mission to foster environmental conservation.

Event Summary

  • - Date: July 5, 2025 (Saturday) from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
  • - Location: Special venue at the first parking lot of Shimoda Aquarium
  • - Collaboration: Shimoda Aquarium, PADI Asia Pacific, Refineverse Corporation

REAMIDE®: High-Quality Nylon Pellets

After collecting and cleaning the used fishing nets, which involves removing metallic parts, the nets are sent to Refineverse's factory located in Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture. This facility specializes in recycling not only fishing nets but also airbags from discarded vehicles. The end product, REAMIDE®, is utilized across various industries, including construction, electronics, apparel, and office furniture. The nets collected during this project will be reincorporated into the cycle as REAMIDE® materials for numerous products.

Additionally, participants were given novelty tape made from REAMIDE®-based materials as souvenirs, making the learning experience about recycling both engaging and practical.
