Paul Menzer Appointed as Inaugural Folger Chair in Shakespeare Studies
The Folger Shakespeare Library is excited to announce the appointment of
Paul Menzer as the inaugural
Folger Chair in Shakespeare Studies. This fellowship represents a significant step forward in supporting mid-career and established scholars focusing on the extensive research and programming associated with Shakespeare and his works.
A Meaningful Appointment
Menzer, who currently serves as the Executive Director and professor of Shakespeare and Performance at Mary Baldwin University, brings a wealth of experience to the position. His qualifications, spanning from notable biographies of Shakespeare to expertise in performance studies, make him a well-suited candidate for this prestigious role.
During his tenure at the Folger, Menzer will focus on his upcoming project titled
'Shakespeare's Enemies.' This research aims to dive into the cultural history surrounding negative sentiments towards Shakespeare. Menzer suggests that the dislike and resistance to Shakespeare's works have played a crucial role in both his canonization and the creative expressions of various thinkers from contemporary times and beyond, including figures like Robert Greene, Voltaire, and George Bernard Shaw.
Director of the Folger Institute, Patricia Akhimie, remarked on the significance of this appointment: "The Shakespeare Chair formalizes a long-standing custom at the Folger of working closely with and supporting impactful Shakespeare scholars."
The Role and Its Impact
The Folger Chair in Shakespeare Studies was conceived by Folger Director Dr. Farah Karim-Cooper and Akhimie. Reflecting on the intentions behind the role, Dr. Karim-Cooper commented on the necessity of supporting distinguished academics who aim to continue their research while also guiding the next generation of scholars.
The fellowship lasts for
11 months and offers an opportunity for Menzer to engage deeply with the Folger’s unparalleled collection of Shakespearean works, while also participating actively in the community. His presence will be pivotal in promoting dialogue and intellectual exploration through various initiatives, including workshops and presentations designed to influence both the academic and theater communities.
The Folger’s Legacy
The
Folger Shakespeare Library stands as a cultural beacon that emphasizes the importance of Shakespeare and the humanities in enriching civic life. As the site of the largest collection of Shakespearean works globally, the Folger also houses a remarkable assortment of early modern books, manuscripts, and prints. Here, visitors can engage with arts and humanities through varied experiences, from exhibitions and performances to transformative educational programs.
This chair not only confirms the Folger’s commitment to furthering research in Shakespeare studies but also reinforces the need for critical discussions in the humanities.
Menzer's efforts during his fellowship will no doubt encourage curiosity and creativity in new audiences, thereby fostering appreciation for Shakespeare's enduring legacy.
