Exploring Innovative Workforce Utilization Methods in Japan's Shrinking Labor Market

Event Report: Innovative Workforce Utilization in Japan's Diminishing Labor Pool

On April 8, 2025, Trustyyle Corporation, based in Chuo, Tokyo and led by CEO Yosuke Yoshida, organized an enlightening event titled "Innovative Workforce Utilization Methods in Japan's Shrinking Labor Market." This gathering aimed to tackle the pressing issue of manpower shortages faced by many companies, focusing on how organizations can leverage individuals with specialized skills to drive results.

Event Overview

As the demand for human resources escalates beyond what can be satisfied through permanent hires, the event highlighted the increasing interest among companies and HR professionals in effectively utilizing freelance and contract professionals. The keynote speaker, Ryo Osawa, CEO of Piece to Peace, shared insights on how to identify and integrate these qualified professionals into business operations. He also addressed what individuals should focus on to excel as hired experts by providing concrete examples from the industry.

Participants in the event voiced their concerns regarding the potential ambiguity of accountability when commissioning freelance work. However, many noted that skilled professionals often possess a heightened commitment to delivering results. Osawa emphasized that the combination of contractual agreements and face-to-face communication could help mitigate potential problems, creating a more reliable and productive collaboration.

Three Key Insights from Successful Cases

1. Prioritize Face-to-Face Interactions: Setting aside days for in-person meetings, even on a weekly basis, plays a crucial role in establishing trust. Such informal chats and offline discussions foster an environment ripe for generating unexpected ideas that are not often found through remote interactions alone.

2. Clarify Performance Objectives: Rather than setting vague goals like "increasing brand awareness" or "enhancing recruitment efforts," clear metrics and timelines should be established. This helps ensure that both the company and the professionals have a shared understanding of their target outcomes.

3. Divide Tasks Thoughtfully: By isolating tasks in areas where full-time employees may struggle or where there is a distinct shortage of expertise, organizations can create a system where professionals can effectively commit and contribute.

Participant Feedback

After the event, attendees shared their thoughts through a survey:
  • - "Hearing real-world examples of professional talent utilization was incredibly enriching."
  • - "I've learned that the world is tough with only a 10% success rate and recognized the importance of 'fit and negotiation skills' as a professional."
  • - "I expect professionals not just for results but also to transfer know-how to our employees. The opportunity for our team to learn practical skills through training and guidance is invaluable."
