From SDGs to SWGs: A New Era of Sustainable Well-Being Goals

A Shift from SDGs to SWGs: Pioneering a Sustainable Well-Being Era

The Current State of Fatigue in Japan

As of 2025, a staggering 78.5% of Japan's population reports experiencing fatigue regularly, translating to approximately 71.72 million individuals feeling some degree of tiredness. This pressing issue is particularly prevalent among those in their 20s to 40s, where over 55.9% of individuals in their 20s experience high frequency of fatigue. If left unchecked, this trend poses a significant threat to the vitality of Japanese society, highlighting a challenge that transcends individual struggles, impacting parenting, education, and overall community engagement.

The Correlation Between Sleep Debt and Chronic Fatigue

Recent data reveals a troubling connection between sleep patterns and fatigue among the Japanese populace. The correlation can be visualized through the following three key points:

1. Sleep Duration: 20.9% of Japanese individuals sleep for less than five hours per night, signaling a public health emergency. This figure reflects a slight increase from the previous year, indicating a worsening lack of sleep across the nation.

2. Fatigue and Vitality Correlation: A clear relationship exists between sleep duration and energy levels. Only 14.0% of those who sleep less than five hours report feeling energetic, whereas those who sleep between six to eight hours see this percentage rise to 58.5%. Even among people who achieve over eight hours of sleep, a higher percentage of them report feeling invigorated, proving that adequate sleep is crucial for maintaining mental and physical health.

3. Quality of Sleep: The presence of interruptions during sleep, particularly waking up at night, drastically distinguishes energy levels among individuals. Alarmingly, 39.7% of those frequently fatigued report experiencing nighttime awakenings, compared to only 8.1% of energetic individuals, underlining the necessity for both quantity and quality in sleep.

The Journey to Weight Loss: Transforming Sleep and Diet

Having endured a hectic lifestyle marked by 15-hour workdays and irregular sleep patterns, I reached a critical point in my life, weighing 74 kg at age 22. However, through a concerted effort to enhance my sleep quality and revamp my eating habits, I managed to lose 14 kg, now standing at a healthier 60 kg. This experience reinforced my belief that the ability to recalibrate oneself is paramount in addressing Japan's ongoing wellness crisis.

My Vision: Establishing Mindfulness as Japan’s New Standard

My dream is to cultivate a society where business professionals throughout Japan awaken every Monday morning feeling energized and inspired. Mindfulness is a pioneering method already integrated into educational and governmental practices in many countries. Recent studies, including one by a prominent instructor in a mindfulness certification course I attended, demonstrate that improved sleep quality can be achieved within three months of consistent mindfulness practice, insights that are being supported by research in global medical literature.

1. Integrated Approach of Sleep, Breathing, and Posture: Drawing on my personal experiences, I aim to deliver sessions focused on enhancing sleep quality—even in those who currently sleep less than five hours—to business professionals nationwide.
2. Transition from SDGs to SWGs: To foster a vibrant society, it's essential for the next generation to be excited about entering the workforce. This can be achieved only through collective efforts towards well-being, laying the foundation for a balanced mind and body.
3. Systematizing Mindfulness into Daily Life: By implementing mindfulness practices within corporate wellness programs and community initiatives, I strive to enhance overall quality of life through comprehensive approaches addressing physical, mental, and social well-being.
