Aignostics Launches PathoSearch: A New Era in Pathology Diagnosis



In exciting news for pathologists and medical professionals, Aignostics has announced the launch of its early access version of PathoSearch, a pioneering visual search engine designed specifically for pathology cases. The platform enables pathologists to quickly find similar diagnosed reference cases based on a single screenshot of a relevant area from a HE slide. This innovation marks a significant leap forward in aiding diagnoses, particularly for rare and complex conditions.

The Challenge of Differential Diagnosis


Pathologists often face the daunting task of diagnosing complex cases, which can constitute up to 20% of their workload. The resources currently available for such cases largely consist of textbooks, databases, or external consultations—each of which entails additional costs and time. For instance, consulting fees at major cancer centers can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars per case.

Dr. Simon Schallenberg, an Associate Professor and Pathologist at Charité - University Medicine Berlin, emphasized the importance of timely second opinions in difficult cases. "It can take hours to exchange images digitally and days to send the slides by mail. Having immediate access to comparable diagnosed cases through PathoSearch puts pathologists in a much stronger position from the outset," he remarked.

How PathoSearch Works


PathoSearch operates on the premise of the image itself, automatically retrieving results from its proprietary, multilateral reference database based on embeddings from the Atlas 2 model. This groundbreaking model was developed in partnership with the Mayo Clinic and is tailored for pathology. Each return links to a validated, diagnosed case, often substantiated by molecular tests and completed with pathologist annotations.

Moreover, pathologists can navigate through various cases while reviewing their slides, enhancing their understanding and leading to more informed diagnostic decisions. The database is anticipated to exceed one million whole slide images before its general release, currently housing over 310,000 images from more than 35,000 cases. These cover over 300 diagnostic entities across 27 organs, aligning with the WHO classification of tumors, particularly focusing on malignant tumors.

Integration and Future Prospects


In addition to its independent utility, Aignostics has made PathoSearch compatible with image management systems. The first integration is available on Techcyte Fusion® AP, where pathologists utilizing Fusion can request demonstrations from their Techcyte representatives.

While PathoSearch is currently free during the early access phase, it is essential to note that the platform is meant exclusively for research purposes and should not be used for diagnostic applications. Interested pathologists can join the waitlist on the Aignostics website.
