Survey Highlights Career Growth Desire Among Working Professionals in Japan

Understanding the Career Aspirations of Japanese Workers

In a recent study conducted by Shikigaku Inc., a firm specializing in management consulting using their unique methodology, the preferences and perceptions of professional growth among employees aged 20-50 have been uncovered. The survey took place from May 9 to May 13, 2025, and the results indicate a significant trend: many employees dislike ambiguous evaluation systems and are actively seeking opportunities for growth in their careers.

Emergence of Growth Opportunities

The survey revealed that 57% of respondents feel that they are not experiencing growth in their current employment. This reflects a broader issue within Japan's workforce, where individuals often find themselves trapped in roles that do not foster development. Here are the findings regarding employees' perceptions of their growth:
  • - Feel a high sense of growth: 5.2%
  • - Feel some sense of growth: 37.8%
  • - Feel little growth: 43.3%
  • - Feel no growth at all: 13.7%

Interestingly, those who do feel they are growing often cite that their skills are expanding, with 44.9% indicating they have learned new capabilities. When asked about the conditions that make them want to stay with a company, the second highest factor after comprehensive benefits is the presence of a supportive growth environment.

Clarifying Evaluation Systems

A significant portion of employees from all age groups shared their concerns regarding evaluation clarity. Over 30% of the respondents indicated that they are unsure about how evaluations are determined. The breakdown of their thoughts is as follows:
  • - Uncertainty about evaluation criteria: 36.7%
  • - Performance-based evaluation: 26.1%
  • - Subjective criteria (e.g., supervisor preference): 15.5%
  • - Results-based assessment: 14.1%
  • - Effort-based evaluation: 7.6%

The ambiguity surrounding evaluation systems is a barrier to professional growth, contributing to a work environment where employees struggle to recognize their progress.

Concluding Thoughts

The findings of this survey emphasize two crucial elements that can create an environment conducive to long-term employee engagement: the establishment of a growth-friendly atmosphere and clarity in evaluation procedures. Growth is derived from the ability to accomplish what was previously challenging, and understanding one’s shortcomings is essential for this process.

By setting specific deadlines and goals, companies can help employees reflect on their performance consistently. Notably, when evaluations are transparent, employees are more likely to align their actions with the company's objectives. In contrast, a lack of clarity can lead them to waste effort on unproductive tasks, ultimately diminishing the organization as a whole. Therefore, to minimize turnover, companies must clarify how evaluations are conducted and how they relate to raises and promotions.

Creating a structured growth environment paired with a transparent evaluation framework allows employees to self-direct their development while aligning with the company's mission. When this supportive framework is established, employees can realistically envision their career trajectories and continue to contribute positively over the long haul. The collective growth of individual employees forms the foundation for the company's sustained success.
