Survey Reveals Six Out of Ten Pet Owners Choose Pets Over Family in Stressful Times

The Power of Pets in Stress Relief: Insights from a New Survey

A recent global survey, conducted by Mars in collaboration with Calm, unveils a fascinating insight into the emotional dynamics between pet owners and their beloved animals. The survey polled over 30,000 pet owners across 20 countries and revealed that nearly six out of ten (58%) individuals prefer to spend time with their pets when they are stressed, outpacing the comfort provided by partners (32%), family members (23%), and even children or friends (both at 18%). This striking revelation underscores the growing recognition of pets as vital sources of emotional support.

The research highlights not just the preference but also the significant influence pets have on contributing positively to mental well-being. An astounding 83% of respondents believe that their pets have a beneficial impact on their mental health. This shift in focus showcases a cultural change in how people perceive their relationship with pets, especially in times of emotional turbulence.

Pets as Silent Partners in Well-being

The survey illustrates the many ways in which pets indeed act like silent guardians of our well-being. A majority (56%) stated that their pets were a source of companionship, even in times when conversation felt burdensome. Additionally, nearly a quarter (23%) find solace in talking to their pets, appreciating the non-judgmental nature of these interactions. The calming presence of pets seems to serve as a channel for emotional release, with 84% exhibiting that even merely having their pets around fosters relaxation without the need for verbal communication.

Dr. Tammie King, a specialist in human-animal interaction, pointed out the therapeutic potential pets offer during stressful situations. She emphasized that fostering moments of pause and reflection through interactions with pets can be a transformative part of animal companionship.

Behavioral Insights: Encouraging Healthy Habits

The survey didn't just stop at emotional support; it also delved into how pets influence positive lifestyle changes. Astonishingly, 78% of pet owners admitted their pets reminded them to take breaks from work and daily chores, with half of them experiencing this reminder daily. This little nudge to step away and breathe can be critical in managing stress and preventing burnout.

Moreover, 73% of respondents indicated that pets help them in overcoming overthinking and mental clutter, allowing them to regain a sense of calmness and focus. Such interactions have proven essential not just for pets but for pet owners as well, suggesting a mutually beneficial relationship.

Walking their furry companions was also a highlight, with 73% of owners expressing that their pets encourage outdoor activities, transforming mundane walks into opportunities for rejuvenation. Furthermore, in a world increasingly dominated by screens, 77% credited their pets with prompting them to disconnect and enjoy moments free from digital distractions.

The Mars and Calm Partnership

In light of these findings, Mars and Calm are launching a collaborative initiative aimed at celebrating the unique bond between pets and their owners. During Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States and Mental Health Awareness Week in the United Kingdom, they will release new pet-inspired content designed to support mental well-being. This partnership aims to raise awareness and educate pet owners about the emotional aids their pets provide daily.

In an interactive approach, pet owners are encouraged to share touching anecdotes about their pets showcasing the profound human-animal connection, with opportunities for these stories to inspire exclusive content from Calm.

Through this initiative, both parties hope to enlighten pet owners about the wellness benefits their companions bring, reinforcing the idea that these relationships are not merely beneficial; they are essential for mental health and emotional resilience.

For many, the comfort and companionship of a pet turn stressful days into manageable ones, furthering the conversation about the vital role of animals in our lives. This sentimental bond continues to solidify, proving that our furry friends are indeed the silent therapists we cherish immensely.
