Bridging the Gap Between Producers and Consumers: The Direct Lunch Summit in Chiba City

On March 5, 2023, the Direct Lunch Summit took place at the Hotel Green Tower Makuhari in Chiba City, bringing together an impressive 262 people from diverse agricultural backgrounds, including producers, consumers, and cooperatives. Organized by Palsystem Chiba, the summit highlighted the critical connection between local producers and their consumers, celebrating the bounty of directly sourced food ingredients through an engaging luncheon.

Connecting Producers and Consumers Through Palsystem

At the summit's inception, Masayuki Kanaya, CEO of Sand Farm Asahi, shared his personal story titled "Reasons Why We Choose Palsystem." Having worked in the delivery section of the pioneering Tokyo cooperative of Palsystem, Kanaya has a unique perspective that encompasses the viewpoints of producers, consumers, and staff. He expressed pride in reconnecting with consumers whom he once served in his past role as a delivery person.

"I was thrilled to meet users that I had previously delivered to after becoming a producer myself," he said, reflecting on how Palsystem's weekly registered purchasing system, known as 'Palkuru-bin,' allows for stable, reliable supply channels. Kanaya passionately conveyed that the continuous support from consumers, who eagerly await his vegetables, exemplifies the strong bond that Palsystem has fostered between producers and users, bridging the gap between the farm and the dining table.

In February, Sand Farm Asahi conducted a 'Public Confirmation Meeting,' where producers and consumers engage in a two-way certification process, further deepening their relationship with Palsystem.

Celebrating Gratitude and camaraderie

During the event, 28 tables were organized for dialogues, allowing producers, consumers, and staff members to engage with one another on the theme "Reasons Why We Choose Palsystem." Participants expressed appreciation across the board, from consumers voicing their desire to provide safe and reliable food for their families to producers highlighting the stability offered by adjusting order numbers that enable them to farm with confidence. The relationships fostered through Palsystem were evident, with producers noting how messages from grateful consumers via production cards uplifted their spirits.

As participants shared stories, producers delved into their production challenges while consumers gained insights into agricultural practices. Together, they reflected on flavors, provided feedback, and exchanged heartfelt gratitude, enhancing mutual appreciation between the diverse roles of food production and consumption.

Savoring the Direct Lunch

The lunch, a symposium of flavors, featured six menu items utilizing ingredients sourced from 19 local regions, facilitating a delightful experience that paid homage to each producer's hard work. As producers, staff, and consumers sat down together for a meal, the atmosphere resonated with shared stories and laughter, as taste buds explored the essence of their respective local products.

Each participant took the time to write messages to each other on cards, emphasizing the gratitude for their shared experiences. After the event, these messages were compiled into a booklet that was distributed to all attendees, further symbolizing the day's spirit of connectivity.

Palsystem Chiba remains committed to nurturing an environment where producers and consumers can sustain a "visible relationship" to support each other. By acting as a bridge between farming and the dinner table, they continue to foster a community-focused approach with respect to sustainable food production.
