A Historic Exhibition of Cuban Erotic Art Opens at WEAM in Miami Beach
Unveiling the Forbidden: Cuban Erotic Art at WEAM
Miami Beach, Florida - December 1, 2024: The Wilzig Museum's WEAM is set to unveil its first-ever exhibition dedicated to Cuban art, titled "Forbidden Fruit: The Art of Cuban Sexuality." Opening on December 2, 2024, just in time for Miami Art Week, this exhibition marks a historic milestone, being the largest gathering of Cuban erotic art globally.
Curated by the esteemed Antonio Permuy, the exhibition houses over 150 artworks crafted by more than 70 artists, showcasing an impressive spectrum of styles from the last ninety years. This rich collection features pieces that span from the legendary Cuban Vanguardia generation, responsible for modern Cuban art, to contemporary creators, allowing for a dynamic dialogue between historical and modern interpretations of sexuality in art.
"Forbidden Fruit" aims to challenge and redefine perceptions of eroticism, delving into multiple themes such as spirituality, mythology, nature, and the often darker facets of the human psyche. The exhibition's genre-defying nature invites visitors to experience sexuality in its many forms, from abstract and symbolic to strikingly explicit.
Among the notable highlights is Antonio Permuy's generous donation of over 30 pieces by 26 artists, a significant contribution poised to elevate the museum's collection and provide Miami residents with a visual treasure they can cherish for generations. Esteemed artists whose works are on display include Josignacio, Ramón Unzueta, Carlos Navarro, and Miguel Fleitas, each contributing to the narrative that traces the evolution of erotic art in Cuba.
In a poignant note, this exhibition also represents the final career showcase for artists Salinas and Margarita Cano, both of whom passed away in 2024 after selecting the works for this significant exhibition. The inclusion of this tribute adds an emotional layer, connecting the past to the present.
Additionally, the exhibition will feature three photographs by acclaimed American photographer Mariette Pathy Allen, taking visitors on a visual journey that emphasizes themes of love, intimacy, and the complexities of transgender and non-binary identities. Her works will complement "Forbidden Fruit" alongside an intimate retrospective called "Breaking Boundaries," also opening at WEAM that same evening. This dual exposure seeks to broaden the conversation surrounding identity and sexuality in art and society, making the exhibition even more compelling.
As art enthusiasts anticipate this landmark event, Helmut Schuster, Director of WEAM, shares, "This donation is more than just an art collection; it is a gift to the city of Miami, enriching our artistic landscape and cultural memory."
Mark your calendars to experience "Forbidden Fruit: The Art of Cuban Sexuality"—a journey through decades of artistic expressions that dare to embrace and celebrate the elements of human sexuality, running from December 2, 2024, to July 2025. For more information and tickets, visit weam.com.
