Supporting Young Designers Through Public Voting at Tokyo's Fashion Competitions
Tokyo is making strides in the fashion industry by fostering the talents of emerging designers through two significant competitions: the
Next Fashion Designer of Tokyo 2027 (NFDT) and the
Sustainable Fashion Design Award 2027 (SFDA). These competitions aim to discover and nurture fashion designers based in Tokyo, encouraging both students and amateur designers to showcase their creativity and innovation. This year marks the fifth edition of the awards, an event that attracted approximately
4,800 submissions, the highest number yet.
Public Voting Period
From
September 9 to November 9, individuals are invited to participate as judges by voting for their favorite designs among
59 shortlisted entries that passed the initial screening. Voting is straightforward; participants simply need to like the designs posted on the official Instagram accounts,
@nfdt_tokyo and
@sfda_kimono_wagara. Each person has the option to vote for multiple designs, granting the power of choice to anyone who wishes to support the next generation of talent.
The results will be announced in November, revealing the top three most voted designs from each category. These selected pieces will compete for the
Special Selections Award at a fashion show scheduled for March 2027, advancing to the final round of evaluations amidst industry experts.
Embracing Inclusivity and Sustainability
The competitions emphasize
inclusive design—encouraging creators to design garments that can be enjoyed by all, regardless of physical abilities. Additionally, they highlight the use of traditional materials such as kimono fabric in contemporary fashion, pushing the boundaries of sustainable design practices. This year’s event includes four diverse categories, covering everything from free-theme designs to specialized inclusive designs specifically tailored for individuals with disabilities.
Diversity in Entries and Concepts
A rich variety of entries have been received, attracting not only fashion students but also young creatives involved in art, digital media, and film production. Each design's Instagram post features an explanation of its concept, promoting greater understanding and engagement with the audience. The inclusive design category includes detailed descriptions of how each entry accommodates individuals with different disabilities.
Insights on the Competition Structure
The breakdown of the selected designs is as follows: in the NFDT, there are 15 entries in the free category and 14 in the inclusive design category. For the SFDA, 15 entries are showcased in both the wearables category and the fashion goods category, which includes accessories and shoes.
Second Round of Judging
In addition to public voting, a secondary round of judging will be conducted by a prestigious panel of industry experts. This team includes renowned designers such as
Yusuke Takahashi (CFCL),
Kunihiko Morinaga (ANREALAGE), and
Tomoki Koizumi, alongside buyers and representatives from organizations supporting individuals with disabilities. They will assess the actual garments created from the shortlisted designs, selecting six finalists from each category.
Supporting the Growth of Future Talent
What sets this competition apart is its commitment to not only recognizing talent but also cultivating it for global stages. Participants advancing beyond the first round will benefit from workshops led by industry veterans, while the finalists will be provided opportunities to learn about business in fashion. Award winners will gain up to
1 million yen in cash along with support for launching their brands and presenting their work during Paris Fashion Week.
Conclusion: Tokyo’s Fashion Aspirations
Through initiatives like NFDT and SFDA, Tokyo is positioning itself as an ultimate fashion capital, aiming to stand shoulder to shoulder with iconic cities such as Paris, Milan, New York, and London. Many previous winners have successfully established their own brands and received national and international recognition, proving that these competitions are indeed a stepping stone for upcoming talents in the fashion industry.
