Survey Findings on Storm Preparedness
A recent survey, the T-Rex® Tape Storm Readiness Report, has revealed surprising insights into how homeowners in the United States prepare for storms. Most respondents, around 63%, rated their preparedness for storms as seven out of ten or higher. While this indicates a level of confidence, deeper analysis shows that many essential elements of preparedness may be overlooked when severe weather hits.
Key Insights from the Survey
Kerry Haugh, the Director of Product Marketing for T-Rex® Brand, expressed the intent behind the survey: "We wanted to look past the checklist people already know and understand readiness once storm damage actually happens." Approximately 48% of the individuals surveyed confirmed they checked batteries for emergency devices, and 45% reported trimming trees around their houses in preparation. However, concerning gaps between preparedness and readiness emerged from this research.
The Missing Repair Step
Despite a high level of confidence in storm-related preparations, the survey highlighted a concerning trend. Eighty percent of Americans reported experiencing unexpected home damage requiring immediate repairs, with nearly half indicating such occurrences are increasing, mainly due to the aging infrastructure and extreme weather patterns. Yet only 30% had organized their repair tools as part of their storm preparation efforts. Additionally, only 51% felt that their emergency storm supplies were readily accessible.
The Fix-It-Fast Instinct
Interestingly, most homeowners seem ready to tackle repairs when damage occurs. Around 58% are willing to seal small leaks to prevent water intrusion, while 46% would attempt to secure broken windows or doors. Importantly, over half of those surveyed indicated they fix storm damage within 24 hours of noticing it. Nevertheless, a third of the participants acknowledged that waiting too long for repairs resulted in more significant and costly damage.
When asked about what factors delay repairs, respondents cited cost and the necessity to hire professionals as primary concerns. However, 24% also highlighted the lack of the right supplies and 20% reported not possessing adequate tools as hindrances.
Reaching for the Wrong Tool
Furthermore, awareness of the suitability of tools is also an issue; 59% of respondents recognized that waterproof repair tape is better suited for heavy-duty repairs compared to traditional duct tape, with 59% expecting it to keep water out, and 56% believing it should endure rains. Nevertheless, duct tape appeared in 69% of emergency storm kits, while waterproof repair tape was only found in 37%. Alarmingly, when confronted with storm damage, approximately 75% of homeowners defaulted to using duct tape simply because it was the most accessible option.
