Tamiya Home Takes Action Against Heat Stroke
As the summer heat intensifies, the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly heat stroke, rises substantially. Tamiya Home Co., Ltd., a company based in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, is proactively strengthening its measures to ensure the safety and health of employees and contractors working on construction sites. The company's motto, "Kaite wa Mirai wo Kagayakaseru," translates to "Dismantling Makes the Future Shine," underlines its commitment to safety as it embarks on this new initiative.
Background of the Initiative
With the revision of the Labor Safety and Health Regulation effective June 1, 2025, there will be a mandatory reinforcement of heat stroke prevention strategies in industries with outdoor work, including construction. Data from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare shows a significant rise in heat-related incidents, particularly in the construction sector, where about 20% of heat stroke cases are reported. In 2024, there were 1,257 individuals wounded due to heat illnesses at work, marking a 14% increase compared to the previous year.
Tamiya Home recognizes its social responsibility to protect the health and lives of all individuals involved in its projects. Having established a strong safety management system, the company aims to prevent severe incidents resulting from heat-related conditions.
Upcoming Conferences and Training
To further enhance its heat stroke prevention measures, Tamiya Home will hold a "Heat Stroke Prevention and Safety Improvement Conference" at its Tokyo office in Chiyoda Ward. This conference is targeted at representatives and safety department personnel from subcontractors working on Tamiya's sites. The sessions will cover crucial topics such as the company's heat stroke prevention guidelines, methods to calculate the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), and emergency communication protocols. The meetings are scheduled for July 24, 28, and 29, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Focus on Practical Steps
During the discussions, attendees will learn about practical actions they can implement to safeguard their teams during high-risk periods. This includes visualizing communication channels for emergencies and setting clear standards for rest breaks based on temperature and WBGT readings. A three-step approach will be taken to evaluate and address heat-related risks:
1.
Monitoring the Environment: Implementing temperature and WBGT measurements via email notifications. Cross-communication tools will be used by both Tamiya's staff and subcontractors through the heat stroke prevention checklists.
2.
Determining Actionable Responses: Clear visibility on emergency contacts and break time guidelines based on environmental data will be established.
3.
Effective Response Plans: Presenting at least three different cooling strategies during extreme heat situations, based on the Ministry's examples for immediate reference during emergencies.
Commitment to Safety
Tamiya's Director of Civil Engineering has emphasized the company's dedication to comprehensive safety management, with a Safety Environment Division in place to conduct regular patrols and monitoring. The recent safety patrols revealed that actual incidents of heat stroke have so far been zero; however, the company understands that ongoing education and communication are key to maintaining this record.
President Akihiko Tamiya highlights, "This initiative is not only about compliance; it’s about fostering a culture where every worker feels empowered to take care of their wellbeing. Our aim is to ensure that all employees and contractors can focus on their work without the dangerous distraction of heat-related stressors."
With the looming threat of rising temperatures each summer, Tamiya Home stands firm in its resolve to create safer environments for construction workers and their affiliates, ensuring their health and well-being come first. This is a prime example of a company aligning its practices with new regulations to provide tailored solutions that address the challenges posed by significant heat exposure in work settings.
